Is it any wonder people not from here assume we're a bunch of bumbling idiots stuck in the dark ages after reading a post like that? Movies and bait in the same store?!? Calling people "Bubba?" Everything fried in bacon grease? You must be from way out in the "sticks," because I have never heard of any of this stuff.

that's just my point. we southerners know its ok to laugh at ourselves. i for one think its hilarious that yankee's see us this way, when the closest they have ever been to a southern is when they stopped to use the bathroom at a kentucky fried chicken. as for my being from the "sticks". i guess i am. a little town called blue ridge. a place where you can let your kids play outside, and not worry about drug pushers, or molesters. a place that still believes in helping your neighbor, and the golden rule. a place where someone might say " Mr. James fell and broke his leg yesterday. i think i'll stop by and take him some supper." if being from a city means giving these things up, then you can have it. we do have have movies and bait in a lot of the country stores, these still are not as funny as driver thru liquor stores. funnier yet is that yankee's spend more time pissing and moaning about a job than it takes to do it. by the way. why is it yankee's make such a big deal out of their A's? they love to roll those long A words. like caaaaaaaaaar or paaaaaaaark. really it's just an A let it go. once it leaves your mouth its not yours anymore, but dont worry theres more where that came from i promise. us southerners crack jokes on our seleves all the time. we dont mind, but try to crack a joke on a yankee. they get pissed about it or look at you like you have 3 heads.

Some funny stuff in this thread overall, but your exposure to "yankees" is apparently very limited. (Btw, you're describing what sounds like a Boston accent there. We northerners are not all from Massachusetts.)

i'm not saying all yankee's are from Massachusetts. the point i'm trying to make is this. some yankee's are to up tight. now i'm not saying there aren't up tight southerners. just far fewer. you just made my point in your reply. i make a joke about the nothern accent, and your mad about it. i make jokes about the south and your fine with it. just relax a little, and remember the war of northern aggression is over. i know yankee's call it the civil war, but there was nothing civil about it (by the way yankee's this is where you laugh). you have to laugh at yourself form time to time. by the way not all southerners are from mississippi, and have cotton growing in there back yard. even if my grandpa used to tell me he had to walk through 10 miles of cotton to get to school. up hill both ways. (again this is where you laugh yankees)

Sorry, I haven't made your point at all. I'm also far from "mad" about your comments.
I'm just saying that your humor paints everyone you consider a yankee with an extremely broad brush, and it's extremely inaccurate...about as accurate as lumping all southerners, from Texas to North Carolina as the same, and applying the same stereotypes to them. But fine, have at it.

I agree with leavingnj. zippo, you seem to assume all stereotypes are correct, no matter how ridiculous, I wonder how many "yankees" you actually know? (btw, i've been to blue ridge, ga, I love it there! )

what does this have to do with what we are talking about???? I've lived in plenty of cities where people are friendly, the neighborhoods are safe and we take care of each other, and not all northerners are from cities???? i'm just trying to get a feel for where your head is at????

ok heres where my head is. someone put up a post about being from the "sticks". like it was a bad thing. if i took it wrong i'm sorry about that. it's not blue ridge GA. it's blue ridge south carolina. i know i got way off base from what the poster was asking about. i put up a few jokes about the southeren people because i thought it was funny to be asking about things like that. i know there are good people in the cities, but you have to admit that most dont know their neighbors. i didnt really mean to make anyone mad. so i cracked a few on the yankees. i didnt know that was going to make everyone so up tight about it. everyone keeps saying i dont know that many people from up north. well, i hate to tell you this. i'm a truck driver, and travel all over the country. i've meet and talked to people from different countries, and all walks of life. again i didnt not mean to insult anyone. all the people i've meet from up north laugh about being from the south, but crack a few on them they get mad about it.

zippo2u and everyone else,
Rural PA is no different - we just use yun's instead of all y'all. If fact, rural anywhere is pretty much the same from my experience.

I don't think he made this list up, I have read this before in an email forward or somehwere like that. I do think it is a pretty funny list at face value, but unfortunately it speaks to the larger issue of very real sterotypes about both the North and the South. And I can say from firsthand experience that people from many areas of the country believe Southerners are actually just like this. While they are unfortunate and frustrating prejudices and stereotypes, they are the images that many people receive and hold about the South. Our media, culture, TV and movies have not done the South any favors in this regard IMO. While you can certainly find some of these things, a lot of people in other parts of the country have the perception that this is all there is in the SOuth. Other parts of the country also have stereotypes; ie "Yankees in the North", or "Valley girls in California", but it seems that the Southern stereotypes are more insulting, and are held in a more negative and harmfull light.
As for bears, the upstate is said to have nearly one thousand black bears, mostly north of Hwy 11. There have been a number of sightings throughout the upstate over the past few years as their numbers have grown and new land is developed. I have also always heard rumors of mountain lions around, but they would be very rare if they do indeed live here. You will see many snakes and spiders of course; I recently saw 3 snakes on a hike at Jones Gap. A ring-necked racer, a brown-water snake ( not a water moccassin) and a beautiful milk snake: all non-poisonous! It has been a pretty bad year for Black widows this year, but just a little care should keep you safe, and I have never personally known anyone to get bit though I am sure it happens. Our main poisonous snakes are the copperhead and Eastern diamondback rattler. We also have the Eastern coral snake, but they are rare and very reclusive.
