Maybe you guys should start another thread about religion in the South and how it has affected you? Just a suggestion.

I grew up in Oklahoma and Texas. When my job moved me to Pittsburgh and New Jersey at age 30 something, I learned the northern culture answer to a question not asked of me in my first 30 years of living. That question was not what church do you go to but "what are you?"

I had to call home to learn the answer as both sides of our family had been in this country for centuries. I contend this question is stranger trying to find out what you might have in common or to talk about to learn.

Centuries ago being of a certain culture did impact your career in this country and acceptance in some so called open societies. I found most only asked the question once of course,

Yes- forgot about that but in the diverse NY area people did want to know your ethnic background.
