Since I've lived here, I've noticed it really depends on a good deal of variables (rain for the season, heat, cold, dry, etc). Some years have been early and it start mid September. Some years have been late in starts late October. One thing to note, there are so many kinds of trees, the color change goes on for several weeks.
I have seen some little changes already around Mauldin. We don't usually get the rain here that they get north of I-85 so it may be a little earlier than usual.
I've lived in parts of Upstate SC for more than 6 years. I've never seen significant fall colors here in September (of course, as noted above, this depends on multiple variables: drought, temps, sunlight, etc).
Here is the current Fall Foliage Map (as of Sept. 16th, from Weather.com)
For the Upstate of SC, typical peak color occurs in late October - see: Normal Peak Times for Fall Color (also from Weather.com)
The SC State Parks website has a dedicated Fall Foliage page: Fall Foliage
(their first color update begins September 29th)
Typically, with a gain of 2,000ft in the bordering counties of NC, peak color occurs there in early to mid October.
The fall color season is normally prolonged here in the Upstate and can last well into November.
Is anyone seeing change in the area yet? I heard the NC mountains are almost at peak.
I was up in the mountains this past weekend. Not even close to peak in NC. You will see some color in the higher elevations (+3,500) but in two weeks it should be quite a show.
