Spartanburg County constituents voted to approve a six-year, one-cent sales tax increase to fund $217 million in new judicial center and city-county government complex construction projects.

The tax would begin Tuesday, 1 May 2018, and end Tuesday, 30 April 2024.

Of the $217 million going to new construction, $151.5 million is projected to fund a new courthouse, city municipal court/police facilities, county emergency operations center, and parking; and $65.3 million is projected to fund a new city hall and county administration building.

"The one cent sales tax would not apply to unprepared food (groceries), prescription medicines, gasoline purchases, certain maximum tax items such as automobiles, and sales of personal property otherwise exempt from State sales tax" and would require another public vote to continue past the 30April2024 end date.

Extra leftover revenue from the tax go's to road and bridge improvements.

I am okay with the county sales tax. It will raise the funds necessary to replace outdated and crumbling facilities, and, by law, will end in six years.

Does anyone know if these new facilities will be at new locations, or will they be built at existing locations?
