If so, who did you use? Did you include "guest house" quarters above the garage? Is it built out of the same materials as the main house (ie brick, stone, siding etc). And finally, approx how much would one expect to pay for a 2 car detached garage with living quarters above? Thanks for any tips you can give. Not sure if this is something we'd want to pursue or if it's biting off more than we can chew!

Back in the 80's my husband did on our first house. No we didn't have guest quarters but it did have a loft above the garage. It was sided the same as the house and looked like a barn having a barn door on the second level. My husband built walls in the basement after work and on weekends he would take the walls out the bulkhead door and put them up. Neighbors were amazed that the walls went up so fast. He did the same thing when he put dormers on the upstairs of the house. We bought the house unfinished up and finished the upstairs and he built the walls completely sided of the dormers upstairs before he actually cut out the roof so that the walls and roof went up in a day without leaving an opening. The only thing we had done was digging and pouring the foundation and someone put on the overhead doors, he did it all pretty much by himself.

Yep, he is. That photo is pretty current, we sold the house in 91. The new owners painted the yellow, we had it white.
