ShabbyChick, I remember mentioning this somewhere in this forum, but perhaps you missed it... You will be surprised when you visit Greenville how many Northerners live here. I seriously would not be shocked to learn that there are as many or more Northerners in town than native Southerners. This is very easy to understand once you are living here. I am only mentioning this because it might help to ease your apprehension about visiting someday.

Well, isn't your culture different? Do you wave at people or smile and say hello when you pass them on the street? Do you let people in when you are in traffic? Are you abrupt with salespeople? If you want to get along in the south with the natives, some things have to change...

It has nothing to do with culture. You are either a nice/friendly person or you are not. I grew up in Pittsburgh(The North) and everyone was nice, waved and let you into traffic. I moved to Orlando(The South) in 98 and found that nobody waved and try to get out in traffic I dare you. The people here are down right mean! This kind of bickering keeps the negative feelings between everyone going. It's not about the north/south, it is about if you are a kind person or not period.

I totally agree with AaronV23.
I'm Canadian....and we are "known" for our friendly ways.....but trust me........not every Canadian you encounter is friendly. Sure there may be more friendly than some countries but I think it's because being kind is contagious. If you live in a friendly area......it's hard not to be friendly back........

You don't find it to be "abrupt" to make snarky comments/judgements against people you have never even met??? And I find YOUR snobbery against a certain segment of our country moving to YOUR precious city to be rather aggressive. You have made VERY BROAD generalizations. I happen to know a great deal more about northerners than you do, and I am telling you that you are wrong and need to apologize!

You know what? This is ridiculous. We will no longer be considering Greenville for our home. It matters not whether some of the views expressed here reflect SC society as a whole. Honestly, I find it so offensive just to read it, that I am not willing to take the chance of moving to a place where I may run into you.
I'll say it again...I think some of you are so rude, I can't believe you are allowed to post here at all. I will tell everyone I know who is considering a move, NOT to come to City-Data for information.

Shabbychick,I hope you decide not to base your decision to move to Greenville on this forum. Message boards like this one are like a playground for argumentative people just looking for someone to bicker with. I've seen it on every message board I've been to- regardless of the topic. I think some people take the anonymous nature of a message board and use it as their way to lash out at anyone and everyone. Anyway, I have found Greenville to be a wonderful place in the 8 months that we have been here and have yet to run into anyone with the "stay away northerners" attitude as a few of the posters on this forum.Kristy

Have you found no valuable information on this forum then? That would be a major disappointment, since it is the only reason I post firsthand information here.
