I have never heard that. Same with WSPA- Spartanburg, WYFF- Greenville, and WLOS-Asheville. It is the Greenville, Spartanburg, and Asheville market. End of subject for me. If you think Greenville is the Golf Capital of the World it can be the Capital!
If this is important to you, perhaps you should contact ESPN and other outlets that refer to our local market as Greenville rather than Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville-Anderson.
The information that I was trying to relay is there are a lot of golf fans in our local area however local area is defined by the ratings people.
I've been in Greenville for most of the past 20 years and I could not have listed the local tv station call signs that you listed from memory. I don't even understand why you listed them on this topic.

The Greenville TV market is called Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market and also includes Anderson, western NC, and northeast Georgia. It is actually the largest TV market in SC because it includes western NC and northeast Georgia. It ranks about 32nd nationally so it is a bit larger than would be expected because of these extended areas. The Charlotte market is larger and also includes parts of SC including York, Lancaster, and Chester counties, ranking as a top 25 market. The GSP/AVL market is considered a submarket for the Carolina Panthers which is why you see extensive coverage on WYFF and WSPA. The Charlotte TV signals reach Gaffney, Spartanburg, and parts of Greenville but are not included in local ratings as a separate market.

The updated rankings have Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville/Anderson at 38, and Charlotte at 23. Like you said, our area is that high due to the large spread out geographical area. Full list linked below.

Thanks more updated rankings. But some of these border counties can be a bit arbitrary, such as Cherokee County or Rutherford County which could possibly be classified Charlotte market rather than Greenville, as the Charlotte signals are very strong there. Same with Newberry County, which I often wonder why it is not classified as Columbia market rather than Greenville-Spartanburg.
I wonder if TopGolf looks at golf tournament tv ratings when considering where to open a new location. I was surprised Greenville got one before Charleston, Raleigh, Baltimore, and Richmond, and at the same time as Myrtle Beach.
Greenville and the Upstate is a fantastic and underrated place to live if you like to play golf.
