A residential development has been proposed for the site that would add brand-new housing within a 10-minute walk of the Greer Station downtown area, where the city has launched a multimillion dollar streetscaping project to encourage additional growth.

Thanks for posting this.

The idea of providing affordable housing is a noble and desirable pursuit, but the location of this project leaves me wondering...In seeking to spend millions of dollars in rehabbing downtown Greer, it seemed to me that the City sought to move the downtown area upmarket. This project would counter that momentum. I would also like to see the format of his proposal; bringing apartments into the downtown area would be great, as it would help support the economic viability of downtown businesses. Hopefully, the builder's proposal will help foster the urbanity that is sought for downtown Greer.

Take one DHEC brownfield site, that everyone admits to needing an undetermined level of additional remediation and add a few dozen low income, disadvantaged folk. What could possibly go wrong? I'm all for affordable housing, but without the potential for hidden future health risks.

I'd really love to follow the money on this one. Anyone else notice the potential for Shades of Love Canal If memory serves, the original clean up problems ranged from high levels of asbestos and PCB's to heavy toxic metals due to coal ash. Why not build new public housing on the lead polluted Exide battery site, while they are at it.
