In the last few days what look like traffic counters have popped up on every major road in the county. They are two black rubber coated cables about 12 inches apart.I'm wondering why there are two cables? My dad who was a little bit of a conspiracy theorist always said that TWO cables mean't it was a device to measure speed, not count cars.Any ideas?
Single cable method typically is just counting cars. Two cables allows more info to be gathered such as speed, direction of travel, large truck vs car, and sometimes what lane of travel. Usually there will be a small shoe size ish box attached to cables, some storing data internally, others with a simple number visible counting cars depending on manufacturer. These are usually anchored or chained to something like a street sign or tele pole. SCDOT likes to keep average vehicle counts updated annually and/or they’re used for upcoming road construction considerations/planning. The tubes don’t alert or notify anyone if you’re speeding and don’t track any specific vehicles. Just raw travel data numbers based on number of times cable is driven over. Likely will be gone within a week or so.
