Default Worried mom and pet owner forced to come to Spartanburg area

Hi I'm a worried mom and pet owner coming to the Spartanburg-Greenville area. I'm not trying to make anyone mad. But is really scared about moving. I don't know much about the area. Husband decided on a job with Spatanburg Steel without letting us know now we have to move if we can sell house in Ohio. Is it really true that the weather in the winter is hardly no snow and not cold. We kinda of like the snow and such. Also daughter is 12 and really big in 4h and girl scouts. We have chickens (hens only) that she shows along with other animals. Does anyone know if we can bring them with us? Also I have a therapy dog is there any groups? How is schools? Churches? Ihave so many questions but that is a start at least. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Greenville/Spartanburg is one of the nicest place in SC.

It is true that the winters are mild. The annual snowfall is easily less than 6". Usually they only get one good snow storm a year, and that might be a couple of inches. Maybe ever 5-10 years there's a storm that puts down more than 6". Maybe twice a year you'll get a little sleet/freezing Rain.

I know there are active Girl Scouts that sell cookies. I was active in the Boy Scouts in that area, and I believe there would be a similarly active Girl Scout group.

There are plenty of people in Spartanburg County that have livestock. Be sure to make that requirement known to your Real Estate Agent and they can show you only properties that don't have any restrictions. I don't know for sure, but Chickens might not count as livestock, so you may have alot more options. If you like living in the country with a larger plot of land, I'm sure you can have chickens.

I'm not sure about groups for you and your dog. Maybe Google can help.

Schools in Spartanburg are among the best in the state. My in-laws are both teachers in the same district as Spartan High, and they both love teaching there. My wife graduated 5th in her class from Spartan High with over 30 hours of AP credits. She was in the school Orchestra, and was well prepared for her Engineering course work in college. I've known some very sharp folks from Dorman too (the other major highschool in Spartanburg). There are several other school districts in Spartanburg Co. but I'm not as familiar with them.

SC is commonly referred to as the "Buckle of the Bible Belt". In most places there are more churches than bars. There are all kinds of churches, large and small, catholic, baptist, methodist, episcopal, jewish, islamic, etc. There are probably a few more protestant churches than the others, but I'd bet you can find an appropriate place of worship.

I can understand being scared to move in general. The fear of the unknown can be debilitating. Greenville/Spartanburg shouldn't be scary though. They are part of the I-85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte, which is one of the fastest growing areas in the country. A recent survey found Greenville, SC third among job growth. The economy there is doing much better than other places in the country. The country there is very beautiful. There are many state parks nearby in the Blue Ridge Mountains, like Table Rock, Cesars Head and Jones Gap. The cost of living is fairly low too, so I'd bet you'd get more house for your money there than anywhere.

Put another post if you have any more questions.

I don't know where Spartanburg Steel is located but if you are worried about commute times, normal travel between Greenville and Spartanburg for highway travel only is about 30 minutes. How far away you are from the highway (I-85, I-26) will add to that. Stay close and you should be okay anywhere in the area.

The Spartanburg Humane Society has a therapy dog program in place and is always looking for more teams. Testing is on a hiatus right now due to a lack of evaluators, but once I finish my practicum I'll be doing Delta Society evals and I think the volunteer coordinator at the SHS is thinking about becoming a TDInc. evaluator as well.

I have been a Pet Partner for 5 years now and I have finally started visiting since my move last June. We go to Summit Hills (assisted living) twice a month.

Your daughter might enjoy Camp Love A Pet if she's heading into 5th-10th grade. It's a 2 week long, half-day camp held at the SHS in the summer that has an animal focus. It would be a great way for her to meet other animal loving kids.

Phone# for SHS is 864-583-4805 if you want more info.

You can live north of Spatanburg in Cherokee County. The 29341 area is still close to I-85 to drive to work. With animals that might be your best bet. Gaffney is close so you can shop and go to the mall and movies. Churches are all over the area. You won't get alot of snow in the foothills. But 2+ hours to the west you can ski go to the east and your at the beach.

Thank you for the information about the day camp at the humane society that would be right up her ally. We actually started to look up in Cherokee County. We have heard if you want a little bit of land that is where to look. We seem to be steering away from the Greenville area after everything we have heard and looked into. Thank everone again.
