Whenever I start a thread like this, there are two ways to look at it:

The first way is for the reader to get offended and defensive. The other way is to view this topic as a suggestion that can bring meaningful improvements to the area.

Hopefully, everyone will see this thread in terms of the latter.

I love the way in which Downtown Greenville is developing; the area is as much functional as it is attractive - and I am not referring to the Falls. The style of lighting that's used is handsome, and the sidewalks are large and accommodating. There's also a diversity of businesses and restaurants that are actually worth frequenting. Downtown's success, however, has me concerned, as there are no plans for light rail, and the network of roads across Greenville is sorely lacking.

A drive across the area last week took forever - with the main problem being a lack of center turning lanes on secondary roads.

Compared to the network of roads in the similarly populated City of Rock Hill, Greenville County's roads are borderline pitiful. Comparatively speaking, most of Rock Hill's secondary roads are freshly paved, are well lit or have road reflectors, and the majority of secondary roads have a large center turning lane, which helps tremendously.

People tout York County's "Pennies For Progress" program as the means for it's success. Has a similar program been proposed for Greenville?

Yes the local option sales tax has been voted down more than once over the years. Most recently for road projects.

I agree turn lanes are lacking. The most mind boggling one is for Greenville Memorial Hospital. It’s a major 700-800 bed hospital, level 1 trauma center, and there’s no turn lane! Not even a traffic light for the main entrance. Nearly crashed my car trying to see my wife who was a patient. I was trying to turn left into the hospital, other drivers were turning into a fast food place. What a mess.

I thank you for your informative post.

In York County, as best as I know, the County has used *all* of the proceeds to improve County roads; none of the money has been misappropriated.

I'm assuming that the lack of interest is more a rural vs urban issue, or no?

In times such as the one that you described, the roads become a major liability.

What happens when fire trucks have to traverse two lane roads during rush hour?

It wouldn't appear that many projects are on the table, now or in the future.

I am absolutely floored by this; the area continually adds people, yet everything's treated as if it were peachy keen.

Is the focus of Greenville County on downtown Greenville, and the areas immediately around it, and little else? And yes, I am aware of their efforts on the new Parallel Parkway, and on Verdae Blvd, but many other areas need attention as well.

It seems like the roads in Greenville are at least as good as the roads in Gastonia County where you claim to live now.

They've been reconstructing the 85-385 interchange for the past 4 years but you are on here acting like no money is being spent on anything but downtown. This interstate project was the 2nd most expensive in state history.

One of the reasons I live in T.R. Dacusville area. Coming from So. Florida I hate traffic. I can sneak into Easley via backroads for major shopping.

Not even close.

In fact, the NC DOT has widened roads that locals, including myself, said were unnecessary. Moreover, NC roads regularly feature right and left hand turning lanes, in areas that have density.

I am not acting anything .

There would appear to be a disproportionate interest that favors areas in and around Downtown Greenville.

When I looked into the matter further, it would appear that both the County and the State don't have plans in place to beef up many secondary roads.

This is a problem.

My Wife wants to stay fairly close to work - around the Airport area - and I don't know what kind of commute TR to the Airport would present. But for those that have flexibility...TR is a great choice, for many reasons.
