question for locals and people who know the area well
I am consider moving to greenville. the job market at the beach in NC has all but dried up. my question is this. what are the best markets in greenville? I know BMW is one of the bigger employers in the area, but what other type of work is in high demand? I am looking into a possible career change and would like to know some of the better fields in that area. thanks.

Nursing and pharmacy seem to be in high demand and probably so most anywhere you go. If you have an inclination to either of these fields it's probably a good career move.

Engineering has been for many decades and still is a very strong and large industry in Greenville, and even decent in other parts of the Upstate for that matter.
The best longterm career move at this point would likely be to the Medical field. It is growing much faster than can be kept up with, plus it is a very broad field that will continue to be in demand while the world exists.
Right now Teaching is a field seeking help as schools are growing at a steady pace with no end in sight.
There are many other great careers to find success doing here in Greenville, but these three are a good starting place in your search.

Have you checked on the job posting websites? Most of the time individuals may know of one or two actual job openings, but Monster or Hotjobs will have 100's of postings all in one place.

yeah, I check those sites. I also check the local paper. I was just wondering what some of the more stable fields were in that area.

I'd agree with Skyliner that the Medical, Engineering, and Teaching fields are all strong in Greenville. Its also a good sized town, so the service industries (Mechanics, Plumbers, Tax Preparers, Barbers, Etc..) are fairly strong, and as the population grows, these industries will grow too.

Your trends for jobs growth for the whole US are Govt and Healthcare, Plus any service industry dealing with the aging Baby boomers. Senior jobs will have a tremendous growth rate in the future. Be it Home health care, retirement center services,or senior nutrition. also remember that baby boomers are unique so you will also see growth in personal trainers, wealth managers, estate planners and other areas that these seniors will be using

I completely agree with every aspect of this answer. Medical will definitely be a huge growth area for jobs, and obviously the BMW expansion will be something to contribute to our job market too.
As for engineering, there will always be high demand for engineers in Greenville. I can honestly say that I have sold more houses to engineers than any other profession, by a mile. In fact, most of those engineers share the same sentiment: "If you have a degree in engineering, and a pulse, you can find a job in Greenville." (someone actually said that to me once, and every time I've repeated it...complete agreement)
