We didn't go even though I really wanted to because everyone was telling us their were so many people and with kids it would be hard to walk around.

By looking at the pics, it looks like they were taken where the baseball fields are. If that's the case, then the reason it doesn't look crowded is because all of the people there are stuffing their faces with food at the stands until they can't stand anymore or are watching the balloons on the hill next to the soccer field.

Is there a place NEAR the park where I can park my car and get some good pics of the balloons?

Almost anywhere along Main St in Simpsonville. We sat about halfway between downtown and Fairview and had a great view of the balloons.
