My husband & I are thinking about relocating from long Island NY to SC, NC or Virginia. We are looking for a nice town that has a lot to do since we are by a major city. We do not like too much diversity, and are planning on having a family soon. Because of this we will need a good school district also. We will eventually like a house in the 200k - 250k range. Also, he is an operating engineer that deals with HVAC, however he is looking to get into a federal type of job like police, building insp, something along those lines. We are very nervous about salaries and the difference in living as far as that goes. I am an insurance broker and am sure I can find work anywhere I go. We are sick of the hustle & bustle & want a calm laid back life where we can afford to live. Thanks in advance for your help !

Hi Jen,
I am also from Long Island, and do not live in SC, but I have been to the Greenville area about five times. Yes, you can find a house in the 200-250 range and a very nice one at that. I don't know anything about school districts, or employment. The one piece of advice that I can give you is before you move to any other state try to find solid employment before you get there. Also rent for a good year before you buy anything, just incase you don't like it where ever it is you decide to go. Good luck.

Default From Long Island

I travel extensively in this region and I'd like to suggest the following:

VA:

Richmond Area....Close to DC, Busch Gardens, Va Beach, Very Family Oriented. Good Job prospects

NC:

Raleigh/Durham....Excellent job prospects, diversity of northern "transplants",
close to beaches, family oriented, great schools.

Charlotte....Financial center, lots of ex-New Yorkers, Big City atmosphere but also Big on Nascar and Sports.

Wilmington ......Beautiful City on the coast. It even has an Italian market run by ex-Long Islanders. Growing rapidly like many cities in this region.

SC:

Greenville.......Great job opportunities, dynamic economy with new foreign companies locating here. Beautiful downtown, great shopping. Short drive to the beach, Atlanta, Charlotte and the Smoky Mountains. Visit there you will really be surprised at this city!!

If you were retiring I would suggest other great cities in this region!!
Good Luck on your search!!

I'll also suggest Spartanburg. While the downtown area is not near as well done as Greenville, it offers a very similar quality of life and a slightly lower cost of housing. If you get on the west side of Spartanburg school Districts 5 and 6 are excellent with District 6 having one of the most impressive High Schools in the state and all the employment opportunities and activities available in Greenville are a 20 minute ride down I-85.

I must agree with GP2GP. Spartanburg, SC is a wonderful place to call home. Very laid back, slow-paced, jobs galore, exceptional homes on Spartanburg's westside........I'm partial to school district 6. You have to check out Dorman High School. INCREDIBLE. The elementary schools in district 6 are award winning as well (Anderson Mill Elementary). Churches of every denomination. 4 hours to the beach (Myrtle), 3 hrs to Gatlinburg, TN, 3 hrs to Atlanta, GA. Truly experience all 4 seasons here! South Carolina....smiling faces.....beautiful places. Welcome!

I am not sure about securing a job before you get here. We came here and my husband found work. We are renting. We weren't sure of schools but I can tell you that greatschools.net are pretty accurate. Or where my husband would find a job. So we are in Williamston and he is commuting to Greenville. Depending how much the price of gas continues to go up will determine if we stay here or move closer to Greenville.

Be expecting to here "your not from around here". Everyone so far has been nice. We are in a rural area and choose that for ourselves and kids. The only advice I can give anyone who is moving down here is, Be sure to remember your manners, because they put us to shame!!
Thank you, sir or mam'
