Can I find what I'm looking for?
Okay, here goes. My family is considering the Greenville area for relocation. We are currently in SW VA where the economy is dying. Help me zero in on a few areas where we might find the following:
3-4 bedroom home on at least an acre and not in a subdivision to rent under $900 mo..
(Would love an old farmhouse but.....)
A ruralish setting but maybe no more than 10-15 minutes to shopping. A Super Wal-Mart would be great.
Good Schools are a MUST. I have five kids, 2 in middle school and 3 in elementary. All 5 are A/B students here but we have no programs for gifted/accellerated students. No I cannot afford private schools.
Some decent fishing nearby would be great.
High speed internet. Anything is better than dial-up!
Any suggestions or reality checks would be greatly appreciated. We originally looked at charleston, SC as our destination but realisticly I don't think we could afford to live there.

There is a home for rent in my subdivision that is $1200/mo. It is a 3 bedroom ranch with a small yard. You might get lucky with that $900/mo but I think you are a bit short of funds for what you want.

Unfortunately, what myrc60 said seems to be the case from what I've just been seeing in my own housing search for the Greenville area. If you are adamant about getting what you want, I think you're going to have to consider increasing your budget upwards to a minimum of $1200 a month. If you're willing to give up the land requirement and take a regular sized lot (and maybe a tad smaller house), you may be able to find something in the $900-$1000 range.
You'll have much better luck in Spartanburg and Anderson/Pickens/Oconee Counties. They have shopping and Super Walmart, etc. and they're more affordable, but still within a reasonable drive to Greenville's attractions.
I hope you have better luck than I'm having, LOL. Greenville is my hometown, and I last lived there 4 years ago, but so much has happened there in that time that prices have increased a lot from what I remember them to be. I'm afraid I may not be able to afford to live in my own hometown, now. Best wishes to you!

If you get out of Greenville County you will have an easier time finding what you are looking for. Look in Pickens, Spartanburg or even Laurens County.
High speed internet is available from Charter and in select areas AT&T DSL is available. Most people that have Charter hate it; and I am no exception to that feeling.

Website to look at
greenville / upstate apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist
Here is a good site to check out. They list alot of Apartments and Homes on here that are For Rent. There might be some help on there. If anything I would say take some time to come down here first and look around for something so that you get a good idea of things.
I live in Easley (pickens county), out in the country and it seems to be pretty good out here and alot of places are for sale.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll take a closer look at Spartanburg and Pickens County. I can go up a bit in rent but with gas and groceries for 5 kids our budget stays pretty strict. I've just got to get out of Southwest Virginia!!!!

Take a look in Greer, Easley, and Powdersville. That might be cheaper and in your price range.

Look at Woodruff, Moore, Duncan, etc. (southern Spartanburg county)
Everything you said describes where I am (Switzer-- but post office in Moore)... except we don't have ANY high speed internet options. Belief me. The real estate agent told us we can get cable here, but we can't. We can get satellite TV, but not internet. (And we find the tv not worth the pricetag so just get by on antennae-- we have over thirty channels with the DTV converter box).
However, except our immediate neighbors, most of the people live in Charter's area and can get their high speed. Just make sure you contact Charter or the DSL company themselves about your prospective address, because the real estate agencies are often misinformed. And it's not their fault, we get stuff in the mail all the time about getting high speed and whenever we call they tell us we are too far into the country... still we're 15 minute from the West side of Spartanburg (super Walmart, mall, Ross, TJMaxx, Kohl's, Petsmart, Barnes and Nobles, Party City, etc etc) and about ten minutes from five different grocery stores (in different directions).

Thanhks G-Man and outinthecountry. This is a tough job and your replies really help. With so many mouths to feed we have to stick to a budget!
Has anyone here relocated from southwest VA? If so I'd love to hear your take on the similarities and differences.
