Default Looking for info about Roebuck

Hi,
Noob/first-post here. Uhm,...I know this seems a rather unconventional way to relocate cross-country, but I plan, no, *AM* going to relocate
to Roebuck the beginning of `09, from Long Island. Do I have a job-offer, you ask? Why, no. Haven`t even given the employment thing much thought, truth be told. Why Roebuck? Well, it`s not like I picked out the location after much research and careful deliberation, LOL. I did a quickie lookup at city-data to make sure it wasn`t a crime-ridden slum, and looked at Roebuck`s proximity to jobs, amenities and services, and wound up taking advantage of an opportunity to buy a cheap home at a fire-sale price - pretty much sight-unseen. It`s more like Roebuck found ME, than the other way around.

I`ve been living on Long Island for the past 45 years, am sick of the traffic, high rents, rediculous property taxes, high electric bills, and soon to come, rediculous heating costs. I finally got a chance to buy and OWN
a little place of my own in Roebuck, and should have it paid off by the end of the year, so basically, other than food, ect, my only costs for housing will be the super-cheap yearly property taxes, electric and water.
In short, I would be able to work (if necessary)a minimum wage job and actually be able to live on it, or even a decent-paying P/T job, for that matter, since it`s just me I have to support. Since this place has 3 bdrms
and 2 bths, I could even rent out a room in time, and, in theory, live for
little more than the cost of food. So, while I WOULD need to find a job,
it`s not a pressing concern for me, since I`d have no debt to worry about when I moved down there.

That said, what can anyone tell me about the town and the surrounding area? I no longer have any relatives(that I care about, anyway) here
on Long Island, so I`d be making a clean break, and starting a new life in what hopefully be my last, permanent and final home. I intend to leave NY behind both physically, emotionally, attitudinally, metaphorically and in ever other "*ally" way possible. In short, I don`t plan on bringing NY down with me, but rather, want to adapt to the local culture and sensibilities in SC, fit-in, and *become* (hopefully) just another one of the
"locals". I may slip at times(45 years of NY is hard to shake off, and it ain`t gonna happen overnight, I know), but I want to try like heck to make a good impression on my new neighbors. Any suggestions for starting off on the right foot? Any unique cultural/social differences I
should be aware of? Classic "yankee" mistakes to avoid? (Go on, don`t sugarcoat it! Tell it like it is, I can take it)

I`m rambling on, here, I know, but the Deed is being recorded as I type this, and I`m actually excited about making such a major change in my life at this stage of the game. I don`t know a single soul in SC, and I know I probably *should* be apprehensive about making such a blind move, but for some reason, I`m not. It`s a done deal, either way, so if anyone wants to offer any info/advice (The good, the bad and the ugly,...whatever) I`d be much obliged.

Default Good luck in Roebuck

I think what is happening to you is wonderful, life-changing, brave and most of all liberating! What an exciting and interesting journey you are beginning! I am a huge fan of the Upstate area of SC and I find the good folks living and working there to be friendly, polite and proud of their culture and heritage. No matter where you are coming from all of us have the common bond of being Americans! My familiarity with Roebuck is limited so I will leave the floor open to someone in the know. Best of luck on your new venture.

Well, slow down. Be polite. Don't complain about The South and how much better NY was. Don't come in trying to change the way Southerners do things.

And when somebody says you "hurt their fillings" it's not a dental thing. You hurt their feelings. (feel=ill for some people. as does fail=fell, etc. this could confuse you. Also, the word "y'all" is common. Some people think it can mean "you" singular but it usually means plural. It can be complex so here's a page on it: Y'all - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia . Use it however it feels comfortable if that's in it's most basic form like "see y'all later" when talking to a group of people. I know that sounds complicated but you'll get it.

Roebuck has about 2,000 people I think.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, LR It will definately be a big change for me.
The only thing I`m not wild about is the hot summers, but the thought of walking around with maybe a sweater or light jacket in winter, while those
I`ve left behind here on LI will be shoveling snow, chipping ice, slipping and sliding, and probably(by this coming winter) paying $6+ gallon for heating oil, more than makes up for it Add to that the fabulously-high rents and property taxes($5k a year is merely *average* property tax here), along with LA-type traffic which I will be escaping, and dealing with
a hot summer seems a small price to pay for all the benefits of living in upstate SC I think it`s a good move, strategically as well as personally and financially.

Yeah, it seems Roebuck is a quiet little town of which little info is available. I guess Roebuck isn`t "newsworthy" and that`s a Good Thing!

To me, that`s a no-brainer! I`m trying to LEAVE NY, NOT bring it WITH me, LOL!

Post Welcome To Roebuck

Well, I've lived in the upstate my whole life, & I'm 44 yrs old. I am in Moore, which is less than 5 minutes from Roebuck. I'm a member of Roebuck Baptist Church. It's WONDERFUL here. You, my friend, are making a great move. My boyfriend is from Connecticut & moved down here about 7 yrs ago. He said he'd never move back. As a matter of fact, he tells everyone "I may not have been born in the south, but by the grace of God I'll be laid to rest here." It's a very laid back community. Nothing major of interest in Roebuck EXCEPT, we have a new Food Lion, Dorman High School (which is the size of a major university)!!! However, you are less than 10 minutes from EVERYTHING on the west side of Spartanburg........restaurants, mall, movie theaters. You'll be about 20 miles from Greenville, SC, so look online and check out what Greenville has to offer as well since you'll be so close. You'll be about 4 hours away from Myrtle Beach (gotta visit there). Very convenient to I-26 (major interstate in SC). As for southerners in general........we are VERY proud people, and are very proud of our heritage. We talk differently, but we are very polite. Ladies are to be treated with the utmost of respect. Do you drive a truck? lol. You'll be welcome with open arms.......that's just how we are. But like the previous post said.......we don't take kindly to folks movin' in from up north & tryin' to tell us what we're doin' wrong or how certain things we may do don't make sense........they make sense to us. The hardest thing that my boyfriend deals with, is the slang and accent. I'm constantly having to translate for him. We're simple people. OH, & hopefully you won't be offended by being called honey or sugar........nobody is flirting with you; just something that we do (the ladies).
Anything else I can help you with?

Hi, PrettyLady, I`ve been in town since Saturday, and am typing this from my hotel room in Spartanburg. Unfortunately, I am leaving for GSP
in a couple of hours to fly back to NY(I just wanted to check out what I
bought, and visit the Roebuck-Woodruff water district to see about having
the account changed over to my name. I`ve only had a couple of days to
get a feel for the area, and I gotta say, I LOVE it!

The property I bought turned out to be a flea-infested dump, needing much more repairs than the seller let on, or the pictures showed, but in a worst-case scenario, it`s a mobile, so upgrading to a newer and better mobile isn`t TOO expensive, and the lot alone is worth more than I paid for the place. The neighbor(who I`ve only spoken to on the phone a few times, has been very helpful, made sure the breakers were off for me when I had Duke Energy turn the power on this past Friday - he also warned me about the fleas(another thing seller never mentioned). Basically, the mobile really isn`t worth fixing, so that pretty much puts the kibosh on my plans to be living here by Feb - I still plan on moving here for good, but it`s going to take longer because it`s going to take more money for me to end up with a decent, habital place on the property I bought,
but I`m determined to own a home in Roebuck(however humble it may be), and move here permanently.

The climate is a perfect balance between the cold of NY and the heat of Florida, it`s an inexpensive place to live, and it appears the economy
is booming here, with jobs galore for anyone that wants to work. Everyone I`ve met so far, is very friendly, and getting around on the roads and highways is fast and easy. I am not looking foward to returning
to NY this morning(especially, with flying in to Newark, and driving out to Long Island(the 80 mile trip took 4 1/2 hours, going in), but I am taking days off from work that someone has to cover for me, and I need to get
back.

I`m leaving Spartanburg for GSP airport in about 1 1/2 hours

Roebuck is a pretty small place. I know of Dorman, the Roebuck Skate Center, and the CCC.

Umm? Pretty much everything is a 15-30 minute drive from there.

But it id indeed a lovely part of Spartanburg.

My advice: If someone waves to you, wave back. We southerners are very, very friendly.

Also, when you go to a restauraunt and ask for tea, you might want to ask for unsweetened tea if you're not used to the ultra-sugary taste of South Carolina tea. =) (I personally hate "sweet" tea in the North, because it doesn't have nearly enough sugar.)
