Are you surprised? This is South Carolina we're talking about. On the flip side of that, however, the City of Columbia made a $10,000 grant to SC Gay and Lesbian Pride to help bring in entertainment for Pride this year. RuPaul will be the headliner. Columbia City Council also recently unanimously voted to expand their 1993 ban against job discrimination based on sexual orientation to include public accommodations and housing. Unfortunately, state government hasn't learned that discrimination is bad public policy.
Some folks just believe that its supposed to be a man and woman. Should they be faulted for that?
That's fine for them, but why should they impose their rules on everyone? This was a campaign designed to promote tourism, which South Carolina is supposedly known for. Between the flag and now this, the state is certainly sending mixed signals about whether this is a very welcoming place.
I understand. I guess because I don't feel directly affected is why I don't feel as strongly about it. I'm just saying that its very Christian based here(SC), so I'm definetly not surprised. On the other hand though, just because a place is Christian based and sticks to it doesn't mean its not progressive.

South Carolina is a very welcoming place.
However, the state as a whole has very strong opinions. You are in the bible belt.
Most South Carolinians are open to all types of people and cultures, though.
SC is a very welcoming; however, we (most SC residents) do have morals we stick to as Christians and that means not wavering in certain issues, such as marriage. We also are progressive, but that does not mean we have to end up like Rhode Island, Massachusetts and New Hampshire and start promoting that kind of life still for political correctness' sake.

Seriously, what state would wanna be known as "So Gay"? I mean c'mon now. There's such a thing as subtle and then there's "IN YO FACE". This silly campaign was definitely the later. By the way this topic was a long and controversial thread on p&c over a week ago:
To be honest, this kind of sounds like some SNL sketch. "South Carolina" and "gay" aren't usually in the same sentence.
Edit:I wasn't trying to be mean but South Carolina isn't exactly known for being the most gay-friendly state.
