Default A Case For Showing Greenville's True Size

Is anyone else tired of people thinking Greenville is a puny 60,000 city? I am. For those of you that don't know Greenville's urban area is 302,000+(a city's true size), Its msa is 602,000+, csa is over 1.2 million! I'm sick of people thinking we are smaller than cities that we are truly larger than. Example: Savannah with a metro of 320,000. Just read it in the Savannah forum. Greenville County alone is 428,000. Thats one reason people are so blown away when they come here. Its much bigger than they have read. I'm thinking of writing whomever is responsible for the annexation laws or starting a petition to change this. I'm sure we are missing opportunities because of it.

Very true, once people know how big we truly are and all we have to offer, we will become a destination in turn more money into the city creating growth.

Well for starters the fictitious city of Taylors and it's 20k population should immediately be transfered to Greenville. There's no such city of Taylors, it's basically one big neighborhood, yet for some reason it's listed as it's own population center.

Yeah, I was gonna post those, but wasn't sure. It's absurd that these "communities" are listed as their own population centers. It really skews the truth and an outsiders perspective. Greenville really should annex their stats ASAP.

I agree! This is where the urban population comes from. On a much larger scale, Atlanta experiences the same problem. You know, being a city of 400,000+ but a metro of 5.2 million or so! But when you go there you can tell the likes of Charlotte ain't bigger than Atlanta. The only difference is the people who think Greenville is this small don't have a clue because they haven't been here.

Default what the?

yes...i was very confused when i 1st started researching gville. city-data pegs it at around 60k. when i began looking for a teaching job, i found that gville county school district services 56k students??!! something ain't right here. why are cities(towns) like taylors and greer not included? what are they getting out of it by not being included in gville? taxes? surely this screws things like the crime stats, and other high priority issues potential businesses and residents consider before moving and contributing to local economy? obviously county level muckity-mucks are aware of this...do worse crime stats=more $$ to spend for the county? is this issue ever talked about in news locally there?

Greer wouldn't be included since it's an actual incorporated city with it's own city hall, mayor, police dept. etc. Taylors on th other hand has none of these and id really only a very large area of Greenville County.

All of South Carolina's cities have the same problem. I think it's because the majority of people in this state are anti-city or else the annexation laws would have changed a long time ago. You should hear the people squawk around here anytime Columbia tries to annex anywhere, but you see these same people work downtown everyday and enjoy the parks and other amenities paid for by city residents and businesses. It would be so nice to have North Carolina's annexation laws.

That is a good point. People don't want to pay for the benefits of living in the area, but they sure want to use it. Imagine if the tax base was equivilant to the amount of people who use the city everyday.
