Riots/fights at Falls Park.
Ok. I can't stand by anymore and do nothing. This is getting out of hand. Something has to be done NOW before people think our city is full of thugs. I've already sent an email to the city manager with my concerns over this. Oh and if you're a person not from the area, please don't let this stop you from visiting downtown. For some reason, every Saturday night there are a few wanna be thugs who come out to Falls Park and want to ruin the enjoyment for the majority of those who are just trying to enjoy the area by causing riots and fights among themselves. The good news is the police have gotten word of this so they are out there now every Friday AND Saturday night. Hopefully this problem will go away when school starts back up next month. Oh and this same type of crap is going on in Raleigh too: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/cri...y/1155454.html

The good news is it's not. This has only started happening within the last month. Hopefully it doesn't continue after school starts back up.

Sad but not much of a surprise really. Kids get bored and do stupid things. I blame the parents for letting the kids run wild.

I agree completely. Although I haven't actually seen anything legally wrong with the "swarms" of youth gathering above Falls Park these past months (I may have missed the problems because I was merely passing through), I could sense a probability that many were loitering out of boredom and would not hesitate to make their own "fun." My first thought was, "Oh great, Falls Park is becoming the next Haywood Mall, where parents drop off their kids so that they won't have to bother with parental responsibility for a few hours." While Downtown is a great place for kids to have fun, this group has exuded an air of tension, in my opinion.
By the way g-man, have there really been riots in Greenville recently?

I agree something has to be done. The city has invested way too much in downtown to have kids who probably don't have any money destroying the essence of downtown. I hope they come up with something before its too late. Why don't they start locking up parents who's kids are causing problems. They will pay more attention to their child then.

Why would you put "Riots" in the title of your post, even though there hasn't been any? The word "riot" tends to bring forth a rather strong visual image.
How many incidents have there actually been?
And why are you assuming that the kids don't have any money and that they are "thugs"? Seems kind of stereotypical to me as I see kids of all economic and social status when I'm downtown.

From what I can tell after reading around here and on another site there have been a couple of incidents, but not many more. There definitely haven't been any riots, just some small fights that have lasted no more than a couple of minutes. As was said earlier, the police have been notified and there seems to be a stronger presence of them around that area lately. I don't think this will turn into anything bad, but I do agree that we need to make sure it doesn't.
My friends and I have been going downtown by ourselves since we could drive and we never gather around and start fighting! Seems to me like you wouldn't hang out with kids you don't like! Oh well, I have no idea how they were raised...
