NOW you tell me! haha. I went down for the Chick-fil-A bowl this past year and spent the day just wandering and checking everything out. I can't even begin to count the number of homeless people who offered to show me where Underground Atlanta was (for a fee, of course). Several times the cops ran over and ushered them away. I guess the visitors were extra easy to spot, given that both teams' fans were sporting orange (I found Underground on my own, and have no urge to return).

Death of Main Street

It really is not even enjoyable down there at night anymore. Can we start a petition or something to crack down on this loitering and thug problem.

If this keeps up, it will be the end of the popularity of Main St. People will be too afraid to go there and it will slowly die. Better stop it NOW!
Atlanta has allowed homeless types to congregate downtown and near the Marta station. This is having a big effect on tourism. So it's not PC--too bad. Save our cities!

Most homeless people are perfectly harmless. If they panhandle and ask you for money, simply say no. It is terribly unfortunate, but one of the facets of living in a city is that there will be homeless people around.

The do make people feel uncomfortable. Whether it's because they feel afraid, guilty, or whatever.

I don't disagree that they make people uncomfortable, but as long as they aren't harassing anyone I don't see how they can be forced out of a public setting. There are laws against loitering, but it is very difficult to enforce those evenly.

I've heard a lot of homeless people are crazy. I actually ran into a crazy homeless person in the big city but that was just one.

This whole thread has become blown WAY out of proportion with the actual perceived negative incident it is based on, in my opinion. There is nothing to be concerned about, folks. Get out and enjoy downtown with your friends and family, or alone if you prefer. I have yet to see what the continued fuss is all about regarding the incident mentioned at the opening of this thread. If you see another group that makes you uncomfortable, just inform the authorities and let them handle it. If nothing is done and it happens again, tell the political leaders who have the ability to take action. The worst thing to do would be to stay home and just comlain.

+1. This thread is getting ridiculous.
