Tell me about Lake Hartwell!
What can you tell me about Lake Hartwell. How big of a lake is it (acres?) How does it compare to other upstate lakes? What towns around the lake - Seneca, Anderson, Fair Play, Westminster, others) are the best (safest, nicest for lake house)? Which county is better to live in, Onconee or Anderson?
Thanks.

Lake Hartwell is one of the largest lakes in the Southeast. It has right at 1,000 miles of shoreline (something like 972 exact), and is around 58,000 acres. Huge.
My partner and I have our boat at Harbor Light, which is probably the best marina, as it has direct access to I-85 and is also a deep-water marina (important during this time of drought). Even though the lake is down in excess of 12 feet, we are still at 50 feet in our slip. Some marinas (Portman and Hartwell) have had to close sections of docks due to the shallow nature of their locations.
Someone else can probably answer about the best area for a lake house as our boat is our lake house. I will say, I think the Tugaloo portion of the lake is much prettier that the Seneca or Big Water portions. I'd look for something on the Tugaloo.

Thanks for the info. gsupstate. Can you tell me where the Tugaloo portion is located? Also, are there any other nice lakes in the upstate area that you can recommend that aren't quite sooo large?

The river system that creates Hartwell also creates two other smaller lakes at higher elevations. Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee. Both are pretty, but Jocassee is breathtaking! The highest lake of the three and in the mountains, the scenery is simply beautiful. The water at times is so clear it looks almost Caribbean.
Jocassee, due to the beauty, has attracted a very wealthy crowd and developers that cater to this crowd. Expect to pay top dollar for a home on Jocassee.

Hartwell is the 4th largest lake in South Carolina after Marion (110,000 acres), Thurmond (70,000 acres) and Moultrie (60,000 acres).

To my knowledge, there aren't any privately owned houses on Jocassee. The ones you see around the boat ramp area are all owned by the State Park for rental.
I agree, Jocassee is WORLD CLASS Beauty! Keowee is very nice. Hartwell is my third choice of the three. Just look at real estate prices and you'll see that it is unanimous.
