We are coming to SC to check it out for a possible move from NJ. We understand that property taxes are lower, but then there is personal property tax. How does that work??? We have 3 vehicles, 3 quads, 2 motorcycles, a RTV and a Kubota tractor. Who determines the tax on the personal property? Do you have state registration and inspection on vehicles? How does one know that you've paid you personal property tax? Do you get a sticker or something to put on it? Is there the "personal property tax police" that check on things??? LOL!!!

The county assesses them and you HAVE to pay the tax on the on the tagged vehicles each year to get your registration and tag.

I don't know about the RTV and the Tractor- they are taxed Taxation is based multiplying the millage rate times 6% of the assessed value.

If any of your vehicles have excessive mileage you can tell them the odometer reading and they will reduce the assessed value of the vehicle. I am sure it is all on SC websites.

To give you an idea, I pay about $600 for a new Toyota Tundra and $50 for a 1996 Ford Explorer [Oh that is in York county, Fort Mill School district] I am pretty sure York taxes at a higher rate than Greenville county.

Do you have any pets? You better hide them cause they could be taxed too!

Default I just went through this!

As others have said "they (the DMV) will not issue your license plates without a receipt showing that the personal property taxes have been paid." To make matters worse, you can't do it all in one place either!

The personal property tax is paid at the county tax assessors office, while as previously stated, the physical tags come from the DMV. The DMV also applies an additional ~$40 per vehicle in fees to the cost of obtaining license plates.

Since when and what for? We didn't pay anything over and above title & registration and property tax on our cars. We do pay $15/yr with property tax that is listed as road fee. Plates for 2 years was $24.

I'm not aware of an additional charge. Some dealers "charge" for that, but I don't think the DMV does unless you get specialty plates.

There is no tax on pets. You pay $24 for plates be it a new plate or a tag for the plate every 2 years. You pay $15 road fee every year. You pay property taxes based on the value of the car. Our 2005 Honda Accord was approx $225 our 2004 Toyota Camry was approx $165.

I am new to the S.C. and have not bought a new car yet, but isn't it true that you will only pay a maximum of $300 sales tax on your new car?

You pay a max $300 sales tax but you get hit with a hefty hefty hefty property tax on the new car - my 2007 [bought in 2007] tundra at $28,000 has a $600 property tax.
