Default Windsurfing in Greenville area??

Hi there!

Does anyone know if you can windsurf in any of the lakes around Greenville? My son loves windsurfing and we are considering that area to move.

Thanks for any input!!

Rachael

We don't usually have constant winds so it might be tough. Its only really windy in the spring or during a storm. We do have a simulator at Discovery Park water park in Simpsonville though.

Although I've never sailed on SC's lakes, I have sailed on other lakes. Lake sailing, particular on mountain lakes is tricky, with the wind switching direction a lot. I only like high-wind sailing anyhow, so I'd watch the weather and a plan a trip to the coast once in a while.

You could definitely windsurf on Lake Hartwell. There is an area where the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers meet, called Big Water. It is like a bay really....180 ft. depths.....in some areas of Big Water, the distant land is faint on the horizon. Usually windy. One marina, called Big Water Marina, has an abundance of sailboats and a sail school / sail club, so I'm sure windsurfing would fit right in. Hartwell is about 45 minutes down I-85.

I just bought a Hifly 320 with a 6M sail and a 10'-3" board. I am brand new to the sport but have sailed a number of boats including a 38' Catalina. I would be interested in getting together with others who like to Windsurf. Chuck Hardin teaches the sport on Clarks Hill Lake. I was thinking about going there this weekend. Email me if you are interested in meeting there or car pooling.

I agree with the other post that says that Spring is a good time of the year for winds. However Chuck Hardin said that Clarks Hill Lake had 20 mile an hour winds 2 weeks ago.

Email me and I will send you pictures of my new baord and sail.

If you find one or two other wind surfers and there's no organization already available to join, I suggest you start a Meetup group to attract others. Then you can really plan some events. First search for interest on Craig's list.

Here's the closest wind surfing Meetup currently: NC kitesurfing/windsurfing (Raleigh, NC) - Meetup.com
Its in Raleigh, NC!
