Let 'em bash. They do the same thing every time they post a new thread. Think about it.

I don't find "y'all" lamentable at all. It's proper grammar. I've had countless English teachers say it and I've heard it in speeches. It's just a contraction that the South was smart enough to think of first lol.

just because you've heard people say it doesn't make it proper, and "you guys" Means the same thing, and it is more proper than y'all actually, just less appropriate in some situations

My mother and grandmother are grammar freaks and they have no problem with the word. "You guys" is more slang then "y'all", it's just that it's more widespread IMO. It's a contraction. It is proper grammar.
On a non-grammatical note, I think saying "y'all" is much easier. "You guys" is way too cumbersome.

Even though I was born in Greenville and have spent most of my life here, I usually say "you guys" when speaking to friends and family. Occasionally I say "you all" and in specific cases, "everyone". Most people born and raised in the area do say "y'all".
My parents moved to Greenville from Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh) and the Midwest (St. Louis) long before it became "the thing to do". Their families had lived as far west as Southern California, Northern Oklahoma, and as far north as the UP of Michigan, Chicago, Northwestern Ohio, and Upstate New York. If not for my parents' decision to move to Greenville, I could have easily missed learning and experiencing what a great place the city would eventually become. My famliy roots are firmly planted in the Upstate today, and I enjoy the various language and cultural extremes from all regions of the U.S. and beyond. My perspective of people is based on fundamental issues rather than cultural differences.

My father was military so I grew up all over America. When he retired to SC it was fairly easy for me to adopt certain aspects of the southern 'drawl'. Instead of pressing buttons, I was 'mashing' them. I found that I was 'carrying' people places (mostly 'over yonder'). The English language is ever changing because people are alive to speak it. Just because 'y'all' isn't technically proper grammar doesn't mean it's not socially acceptable for 50% of the population. Anyway, I have family in PA that say 'y'ins'... thats weird...
