I would consider it a huge plus to live where there aren't many natives. Note my screen name -- the "50/50 about" part means I don't care for the natives much where I live, but always seem to enjoy people from other states. The natives think they invented this place, land and all. And this is not a condition exclusive to my state -- it's nationwide. Course, my observations are general ones. I have some good friends here who are as native as native can get without being Native American.

Atlanta is a land of transplants

I said I don't know any black people who live in the CITY of Atlanta. I live in the burbs and actually one of my very good friends is black. However, she's from Cape Verde and has a New England accent. I guess you could include my cleaning lady, but I rarely see her. My neighbor is from North Georgia--has no accent. In my area there are lots of Asians, but only a small number of blacks. There are Hispanics, mostly working in fast food restaurants. I know a few who are middle class and they have no accent at all. I don't go to night clubs or bars. Maybe that's where all those sweet southern ladies are? Of course, there's Belinda on the Neil Boortz radio show, who has a distinct southern accent, but she's originally from Appalachia. The northern burbs are quite cosmopolitan--people from all over the US and foreigners, but not too many southern belles. Believe me, I lived in So. FL for 12 years and was exposed to plenty of multi-culturalism, enough for a lifetime.

My misunderstanding. You said you had lived in Atlanta for 5 years so I assumed you lived in Atlanta. I'm in South Florida for another 8 months but my hubby and I are coming up to Greenville to find a home to purchase in March/April. We are actually a multi-cultural family and we are so eager to get out of Florida.
God Bless!

I'm not scared of change except for this one. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Can you really say that The South remains just as Southern even with transplants? Ex.- Charlotte, Atlanta
Where did this 3 year old live? In Greenville? I suppose it's possible but not as likely.
Many people I know have parents with Southern accents but their children don't. Heck, I'm a prime example of this for the most part.(Granted my mother is from the North.)
Even so, it's about more than just accents.

Atlanta is a huge area - 5,000,000+ and about 15 counties. I should have said Metro Atlanta. We are in the Metro Atlanta area of Fulton County, which includes the city of Atlanta. Mostly everyone in the general area is from "Atlanta." I rarely go downtown unless it's to the GA Aquarium or theater, jury duty, etc.
You'll enjoy living in the good ole USA after So.FL. Good luck with your move.

I noticed the title of this thread said "concerned about rednecks." What's wrong with rednecks? If you don't like them and can't accept them for who they are, then don't move here.

Just curious, are there a lot of rednecks in Greenville? On my visits I haven't encountered many.

I haven't really noticed any except for maybe in the northern part of the county where it's rural.

I'd include the southern part as well. Not to say you couldn't find them right in Greenville.
A lot of people are so scared of being deemed a "redneck" if they are a Southerner so they try to distance themselves from their roots. There are rednecks in every part of the country. I'm sure everyone has a little redneck in them anyway.
