I will tell one story I have from our first visit to the Greenville area. A new Golden Corral had just opened at Cherrydale Point, and the place was packed. We decided to try it (not so hot) but it was interesting to watch the people. They were 4 deep in front of the fried food, and there wasn't anybody AT ALL at the salad bar or veggies. Of course, maybe Golden Corral is like that everywhere you go, but folks didn't need to be eating all-you-can-eat fried food. Despites arguments in this forum to the contrary, there is overwhelming evidence that obesity leads to a much higher mortality rate (as does smoking- can't believe nobody jumped on that!). I don't think sidewalks will help much; we have them all over in FL, and we have plenty of fat people. Americans in general are getting fatter and unhealthier year after year. I'm trying right now to control my eating, and get outside and move around more, and it's not easy. If SC is statistically fatter, you really can't argue over it. My late SIL who grew up in rural GA cooked incredibly unhealthy food- every day. She didn't know any different. I think it's part of the culture in the South.

Overeating is no different then drug addiction or alcoholism, it's just more socially acceptable, especially here in the south.
I found more than just a few. I found hundreds of stories of people dying while exercising .. as far as the bible is concerned. Mat chap 15 ver 17 It's not what goes into your mouth that hurts you but what comes out. what goes in goes to your stomach what comes out comes from the heart.

What i think is weird is my gandmother lived to 101 my grandfather 97 . My father is 84 , all have lived in the south all thier life ,all lived on typical southern foods. The worst habits they had was granny liked a pinch of snuff on occasion and grandpap liked a snort of shine now and again. and the both lived long happy lives.

If you exercise a lot you can eat whatever the heck you want. If you don't............ you will be fat. It's pretty simple. Cut back on intake or be fat (and don't complain about it).

First off, would you say that if someone moved here and their house caught on fire because it was hit by lighting, that is was their fault because "they knew we had lighting here"?

Second, you're equating a cultural practice of another country (binding feet) with people being obese. The two aren't even related, unless it was the practice here to spoon feed your children lard from day one. You're comparing a country's culture to people that, in most cases, are not taking care of themselves.

Third, I never heard the stereotype of the South being fat. If anything, this sounds like a stereotype of the where I'm from.

You're so concerned about stereotypes, but yet you are perpetuating the very thing you want to get rid of.
Lightning=act of God(oops was that politically incorrect?) Obesity=eh maybe not. Lightning is harder to control. Please don't come back with some smart comment about lightning rods, etc. You get the point.(Don't come back with one saying "of course guestposter wouldn't want something smart heehee" because I just beat you to it.)

The point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't make sense to complain about stereotypes being applied to you when you move somewhere. Moving to the South and paying taxes will not make you as toothless hick. I would imagine that most toothless hicks grew up that way with family members before them who never placed importance on brushing, etc. I.E.- Why would I complain about stereotypes of binding women's feet when I moved to China? Anyone who actually(and I'm pretty sure they don't) epitomized that stereotype probably didn't just move to China and start randomly binding feet.

If you're Chinese I apologize for making your country an example.

What stereotype am I perpetuating? I'm just saying it makes no sense to complain about a stereotype being applied to you about the place you move to. Heck, in some ways stereotypes are good for the South because it means less people will move here and the longer I'll get to enjoy the place before the culture(not stereotypes) becomes completely diluted.

I've never heard of Chicago being fat. Maybe that pizza is the case but I can understand why!

I'm not sure if The South being fat is as much a stereotype as it is fact. Either way there's no point in complaining about people thinking you are fat(unless you actually are) just because you moved here.

Yep...still not following you on this.

The OP wasn't complaining about a stereotype, they were stating a fact.

1 Samuel 4:18

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Proverbs 23:20
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's

Keep in mind, gluttony is born of both lust and greed, both sins in God's eyes.

Judges has nothing to do with gluttony is is descriptive of king Eglon ... Samuel also has nothing to do with gluttony it is Eli's reation to the capture of the ark.. and in proverbs you must finish verses 4 ...5 and 6 to fully understand the context... corinthians is speaking of sexual immortality not gluttony... read 1 corinthians 10 ver 23-27
