Hi,
I live in Phoenix, but grew up in New Mexico. I have also lived in Nevada. I have been to Greenville briefly, so my question is how different is the culture there? I obviously have a "western" accent, but other than that, I don't see how people could be much different there than we are here. Am I correct?

I am chuckling as I read this because I am a South Carolina lady living in Washington State, and trust me, I am the only "accent" I hear up here. I don't think anyone in the West has an "accent."

To answer your question, the culture is very different, but I think it all boils down to what you're looking for. My husband absolutely will NOT live in the South, and I am sick to death of the Pacific NW rain, so we are looking for a place we can compromise on.

Have a great day, sweetie! :-)

Default People ARE different here

People are different in the Greenville area. We moved here from Eugene, Oregon and you couldn't pay me to move back to Eugene. We love it here. People are so much nicer here and not as "in your face" as they are on the west coast. Of course, that is just my opinion on our experience. There are many nice west coast people too but it just seems like everyone here is having a good day!

Thanks for the reply. I suppose my main concern about moving from the West to the South is whether or not my children will adapt well. They are very accustomed to the Phoenix pace, desert landscape , freeways, and all-around intense energy of city life. My husband works as an IT Director, so he is not really used to nature anymore, except when we can finally break away for a quick camping trip. I think if more people felt the nature connection, life as we once knew it might return to normal. Too much chaos now. Too much "stuff". Do you feel that people in the smaller towns of the South are consumed by their belongings and acquiring more, or are they happy with enough? Is their religion true or hypocritical?

As far as I can tell the people I have met here are very genuine and true to their religion. We prefer to belong to a smaller church, but a lot of the churches even have their own gymnasiums and sports teams for kids.

And as for city life, we have it here! There is most anything you could want around here. Coming from a metropolitan area of approximately 350,000 in the Eugene and surrounding areas, this area is comparable in size yet offers so much more! I doubt there's hardly a restaurant out there that we don't have one of. We have live theatre, a wonderful library system, and parks galore. Memorial Day weekend the city park in Simpsonville is hosting a huge hot air ballon festival. There always seems to be lots to see and do. Greenville even has it's own zoo!
