Nicer areas in and around Spartanburg
I am considering a relocation to the area. What are the "nicer" areas, neighborhoods, or streets? (Within 20 miles of Spartanburg) I also love the old arts & crafts or prairie style houses. Are there any areas that is rehabbed or in the process? What are the up and coming areas around Greensville/Spartanburg?

I am mean this seriously, "Spartanburg" and "Nice" dont really mix. I am not saying it is the dumps, but there is no way you are getting what you pay for when you buy a house in Spartanburg. Just curious, is there a reason you are only looking in Spartanburg.

Are you referring to the city of Spartanburg or the county? We've been looking in the Duncan/Inman/Wellford area and it seems very nice for our family. On the next trip up there are a few homes in Boiling Springs too. Now, for the younger crowd, I can definitely see that there are more activities in Greenville but that's not really what we're looking for. So when you say Spartanburg is not "Nice", what do you mean?

They mean either they have never been to Spartanburg, or else they are elitists who can't conceive of anything "nice" of which they are not personally a part. There are many, many very nice areas in and around Spartanburg. As always, if you're not familiar with an area, a good, well-established RE agent is invaluable. (I am not in RE, BTW).
On the west side of town, numerous developments are located on Reidville Road (now John White Blvd) west of I-26. A little further out are a number of nice developments near the new Dorman HS. For example, Moore's Crossing is a very nice neighborhood for families. Fernwood and surrounding neighborhoods, on the east side of town, is a little older but has many beautiful estate-style homes with large yards. A lot of development has also occurred in the Boiling Springs area, and homes on Lake Bowen are always prime properties.
Agreed, Spartanburg may not be a vibrant, growing area compared to Greenville, but it's a nice, comfortable relaxing place to live and raise a family.

Thank you for the fair and balanced report. What I mean is Spartanburg's "Downtown" area, for the most part is not very pleasant. As far as Spartanburg County, there are some very nice areas, but the crime is very high, they are in alot of debt and the population is actually decreasing in relation to the rest of the upstate. I have nothing personal against the city, but I have just noticed, from living here all my life, that Greenville county is so much nicer and it closer to so many more activities. Just try looking at Travelers Rest, Simpsonville, Mauldin, Taylors and Laurens County. Good Luck

Can you elaborate on where the crime in Spartanburg County is high? What about "a lot of debt"? Is the population really decreasing? If so, show me the facts.
For the record I live in Greenville, have all my life. However, I have many friends and relatives in Spartanburg and sometimes become disgusted at some of the "snootiness" some of you on this forum have toward Spartanburg. I don't think you'd like it if folks bad-mouthed our community. Look, I enjoy living in Greenville and think it's a great place but I find Spartanburg a nice place too.

Yea I gotta say I'm loving living in the county, near Moore to be specific. I'm close to the amenities I want, got plenty of peace and quiet, 15 min drive to work, and 30 mins to any activities I participate in in Greenville, 45 mins to Simpsonville. Certainly comparable (if not higher quality of life) to my time in Northern Indiana during college and more relaxing than my time in the NoVA area several years ago.
We're currently househunting (renting right now) and it can be difficult to find cheap places in "nice" areas, but we have found a few that have caught our eye that are under 100,000 both in Spartanburg city limits and in the county. We're picky too, no subdivisions with houses closer than 20 feet, need a big yard, 3bd house, but willing to do some pretty major fixer upper stuff.

If you have lived here all your life than I dont prove that Spartanburg has a lot more crime, like Anderson and West Greenville. If you watched the news at all this past month, they were saying that Spartanburg was had a large debt and was having to give county workers unpaid time off and lay of many others. And go look up the numbers from even 20 years ago; year by year they grew until the until the late 90s, they went from 52,000 to 45, 000 and now have around 38,000. They are loosing people. I could be way off, but just from the research I have done, Spartanburg has the ability to be so much better, but they just dont care. Its just like the West Gate Mall, when I was I kid, it was the best mall around, now its just a nasty gang hang out. If they would crack down and clean up, they just might get a Chipotle, Ruths Chris, Starbucks and a clean mall.

Westgate Mall "a nasty gang hang out"? Have you been there recently? What facts are you using establishing this claim?
Also, just checking the facts Spartanburg city population peaked at 44,352 in 1960 not 52,000. I'm not sure what hat that number was pulled from. (my hometown of Greenville peaked at 66,000 in 1960 but is now around 56,000). Also, Spartanburg County's population has increased from 156,000 in 1960 to 275,000 (est) in 2007.
What really bothers me about these forums is just about anyone can spout off whatever they want to without being held accountable. Yes, you are "way off" and I think you need to do more research and fact-finding before blistering other people and places.
