Default bad areas around Greenville/Simpsonville?

We've narrowed our search for a future home to the Greenville/Simpsonville/ Fountain Inn area. Have only seen positive input regarding these three areas. Now my question is - are there towns in the vicinity with high crime, gang activity, etc.? We're looking for a peaceful, safe place to retire.

Thanks for any input.

Default good / bad

If you're looking for a safe place to live I recommend either Simpsonville or Fountain Inn. Greenville is very crowded and i wouldn't think of living on the west side. Stay away from the poorer sections like apartment complexes and trailer parks and crime shouldn't be an issue. Fountain Inn is the least crowded but there are fewer places to shop. I live in Neely Forrest in Simpsonville and it's a great middle class small neighborhood where most families have children. I've lived in Simpsonville and Fountain Inn for 31 years and i don't think i'll ever move.

I don't know if there are bad areas in Simpsonville. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that Simpsonville is different depending on which part you live in. Some areas are very crowded, while others are very rural. I think that is why so many people like it... because it meets many different needs.

Fountain Inn is also nice. The one thing to be aware of is that not all of Fountain Inn is in Greenville County. I personally like the Greenville County Schools, therefore I would make sure to stay in Greenville County. Oh, and I do live in Fountain Inn (well, I have a Fountain Inn address). Just to give you an idea, I am 3 miles from Target and all the stores and restaurants on Fairview Road.

Like the other poster said - I don't think there are any bad spots in both the towns. Some parts are a little older than others and a little more seedy - but I didn't see any rough characters. You would be safe in either.

Default what about the west end?

What about in the west end? Near the baseball field? Is that shady/seedy or is that an ok area?

I was around the ball field a couple of weeks ago -- some parts did seem a little seedy.

But then again, I am a country boy, not a city kid so your mileage may vary

There certainly are bad areas in Greenville. Do your research. A search in this very forum will turn up much information. Also try the Greenville Sheriffs Office Website. They have some great crime tracking maps.

The West End of Greenville has taken a huge u-turn within the last few years. Yes, it's true that some parts are still a little shady and you should avoid them but the West End of downtown is doing really well. The new West End Field, restaurants, shops, etc. has brought a lot of people to that area...I'm only 18 and I can remember how four years ago I would have never gone down there. Not only because of the drugs and crime, just because there was nothing there.

Anyways, my point is the West End is really nice as long as you stay in the downtown area. The new condominiums that overlook the field are awesome, and Greenville High School is right behind the stadium as well. West End is a great location...right between the main downtown area and Augusta Road.

I would stay away from the Parker area (especially around the old parker high school), at least most of it. It's a strange area...one street will be full of drugs and the next street is, sorry if this offends anyone, white trash. But then there are parts where you can find the nicest of people...it's strange. One of my good friends lives right across from parker high. I don't mind being on his street, but a couple streets down (7th Street) I wouldn't dare walk down, even with a few friends.
