I love going to good arts and craft shows, and am wondering where the best are in the upstate, or anywhere actually within a few hours drive.

TIA

Oh, Rapunzll, you have hit one of my hot buttons. I have a passion for fine craft. I was closely involved with a fine craft guild in Winston-Salem (with juried members throughout the Southeast) before moving here. I haven't found all the good shows down here yet. Note: I'm not an artist myself but an "appreciator" of good work.

The best local show is Artisphere in downtown Greenville, May 8-10. It's equal parts fine craft and art.

Southern Highland Craft Guild Fair is held twice a year at the Asheville Civic Center - July 16-19 and October 15-18. I always go at least once a year.

The Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair is one of the best and longest running in the Southeast. It's a bit further drive, being in Winston-Salem.

When I have more time, I'll do a web search and share what I find.

There was an article in the Greenville News yesterday that said Artisphere has been ranked in the top 10% of 600 art/craft shows in the country - 46th for fine art and 59th for contemporary craft - by the Art Fair Sourcebook, a "Consumer Reports" for artists looking to apply to to festivals with a proven track record in the way of sales, accomodations, hospitality and overall management. The article also said that attendance in 2008 was 75,000, up from 45,000 in 2007. Wow! Last year was my first time to attend, and I thought it was a terrific show.

Artisphere has also been recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event. It is scheduled for May 8-10 in downtown Greenville.
