Hi Everyone,
WE are planning a move to Simpsonville. I noticed when down there many houses have satellite dishes. Is there cable tv (companies) down there? What about highs speed internet? Some houses even had 2 dishes!! Does satellite provide local channels? Thanks for the help.
Charter is the provider down here. Most areas have cable service until you get out into the rural areas then it can get spotty. In our neighborhood we don't have cable service but from what we've been told, the neighborhood up the street has it. The lines may run right by our neighborhood but the builder or Charter decided not to bring it in. You'll just have to check with the neighborhood you're looking to buy/build in or contact Charter about if they provide service there.
For HS Internet, if you can't get Charter you can look into DSL through AT&T, formerly Bellsouth. The speed won't be as high as cable but it's better than dialup and cheaper and faster than high speed through satellite.
You can get local channels through satellite but with some carriers they make you pay for them. I don't know how DirecTV is but with Dish you can plug an antenna into the back and it will look for over the air DTV stations and incorporate them into the channel lineup and guide. It's an option if you didn't want to pay for local channels and just wanted to buy a decent antenna.
Direct tv charges you $5.00 for local channels. It may have changed since a few years ago. We are very rural and have dtv. I am very happy with them. The only time it went out was when it snowed and we had to wipe off the dish.
I have a friend with satellite internet - she has daily download limits and when I popped her on speedtest.net her actual download speed was .5 Meg where my cable speed runs around 14. In all fairness, she did say her wireless router slows her down, but I have not had that experience at all with mine.
When we were looking it was very spotty as to which neighborhoods have which and for newer ones, they may need a critical number of homes built before the lines will go in.
We only have charter. I wish we also had DSL as a 2nd option but, really, we have only had one outage since we got Charter in NOV, but it was an all day affair! I telecommute so I am very much aware of service interruptions.
Thanks for the info, Diablo and grannynancy. I have just over 16 mp/s speed now, and I'd really hate to give it up. I tried DSL once as a test ...it was pathetic, so for me it's not an option. I guess I'm going to have to ask lots of questions when I come down to buy a house (soon, I hope!).
Well I will say that Charter does *not* in my opinion consistently deliver the advertised speed and the service is terrible. But that is the only choice for cable.
I guess I might have to get used to something less than what I've currently got. I checked my speed this morning and it was almost 20 mb/s. I use comcast for internet and TV, and despite a few glitches over the years, they've been really excellent. So I'm spoiled.
Is charter the only option? What about home phone service..who do you use?
