This problem was in place waaaaaaayyyyyyyy before Sanford came into office. Basically SC has lacked a plan since manufacturing and textile companies started going overseas.
And why do you have a smiley face icon beside your post? This isn't a good thing.

SC financial situation is horrible!!
You are both right. Since moving to Greenville, SC from New York 2 years ago I am stunned by how slow progress is to come to not just Greenville but the entire state of South Carolina.
Most of the jobs here fall into the following category:
Manufacturing/Factory work - 60%
Labor (working in restaurants, retail stores or cleaning) - 30%
Office - 10% (just to support those in the organization that work in the manufacturing area)
Another big thing that South Carolina lags far behind in is paying people a decent wage for their talent and they were lagging behind in that way before the economy went into a tail spin.
Many friends and family have asked me if I would advise them to relocate to South Carolina. My answer is always the same. It is a beautiful state but if you are looking for a job - don't move here, if you do not have a bank account full of money so you can survive while you look for work - don't move here, if you do not have a friend or relative who is already living here and can pull some strings to get you a job - don't move here. If you normally work in a hospital then you will be fine here; Greenville Hospital System has a ton of jobs for registered nurses.
The morale of this story is that if you are not born and raised here then it is tough to survive financially. When jobs become available they like to get their friends and family members the jobs.
Good luck.

Our financial situation does suck. This whole state sucks. We are scum. One day i'll come to my senses and move to Charlotte. We can't even get our power lines buried. In Omaha where my relatives live, all power lines along the roads are buried and the lights are on metal poles like you see on the interstate. Every major road there has sidewalks. Where are the sidewalks on Verdae Blvd and Woodruff Road in front of Costco at? Oh wait. We're finally getting a bike trail I see. Theirs was built over 10 years ago. The whole interstate system is lighted and every light works unlike here where only half of I-85 has lights and half of them only work. They have low-cost carriers like Southwest and Frontier. We have none except for Allegiant which only flies to Florida. They have a highrise over 600 feet tall. We can't even get anything over eight stories built. They have a tripe A baseball team. We got downsized to one A. Anything that causes the republicans to fight with one another and make the democrats look better is a good thing akhenaton.

Who says we need all this stuff? You make it sounds as though there is a problem with any town or city that isn't big. If you want to live in a big city so much then move to one and please stop complaining to those who like living somewhere smaller.
Maybe if Southwest comes to GSP you can fly far, far away because it sounds like you hate it here.

That stuff should be here for a metro area of our size. We have a large metro area now guestposter. Our MSA is not that much smaller than Omaha's and would be bigger if we were going off 2000 definitions. The county that has Omaha in it only has a little over 60,000 more people than Greenville County. Not that much of a difference. Oh and they have an IMAX too. What happened to ours? We have a nice downtown though. I mean that's what only matters right? Who cares about all of that sprawl out on Laurens Road, Wade Hampton Blvd, and Woodruff Road.

But what's to say we need all of that stuff? There's nothing wrong with not having million story buildings and concrete all over the place.

People have to walk somewhere. They need sidewalks to do that. It's dangerous not having them on major roads. Same goes with bike lanes. That's like asking why we need mass transit. Some people are poor and can't afford a car. It's not just that either. What about all of the ugly billboards and above ground power lines in the area? We're becoming a large metro area now and should have things like a large waterpark, low cost carriers, IMAX, highrises, etc. Anybody who says otherwise needs to go to cities like Omaha where they have low cost carriers/IMAX and Greensboro where they have a large waterpark. Guestposter, asking why we need those things is like asking why we need hot women and beer.

Make sure you read those comments with the article too!
I'm trying to fit into the group above and in 6 years I've found I don't stand a chance.

Okay, we might need some sidewalks on busy roads. I'll give you that.

You really want that large waterpark, don't you? These are material things. What says we need to become bigger? If we do, what says we need giant buildings with depressing gray concrete? Sounds to me like you ought to move to Omaha. I'll even help you pack!

You really only need the beer because of the goggles that come with it. (so I've heard, I don't drink.)
