Very well said Cameron & Mark. Don't forget the night & weekend work as well. There are rewards! That is a hard question. It helps to network & get to know lots of people. I have seen some people make tons of money & others drop out. I would suggest talking to some Brokers in person & looking at some real numbers to get a better idea.

I don't think there is any way that's the average, I'd say it's lower, and then factor in business expenses (signs, dues, advertising, gas, etc).
To put it into perspective, 3586 residential properties (single-family, condos, townhomes, mobile homes, etc) were sold in the first half of 2012 for a total of $622,560,414. 828 different listing agents and 985 different buyer's agents were involved in those transactions. That is an average of 4.33 houses per listing agent, and 3.5 houses per buyer's agent for the first 6 months of the year.

I started part time in 1991. My manufacturing job ended up going to China and I was thankful that I was ready to take the plunge and had something else lined up, although I could have gone back to school and the company would have paid for it. While I miss the bi-weekly pay check, cheap health insurance, paid vacation & paid holidays, I will say I have a rewarding job. Sure, it has it's tough days. Homes not appraising, extensive repair list but you also have the grateful people that love what you did for them by helping to get their home sold quickly or helping someone find the home of their dreams. Be prepared to work long hours, night, weekends & holidays. Also, be prepared to work for no pay doing market analysis & such and then not getting the listing. I totally agree that you have to be willing to work at anything you do. In any job, there will be ups and downs. Real estate is not for everyone but if you are willing to do the things I just mentioned including a lot of leg work, getting people to trust you & working at it you will probably be successful. You get out of things what you put into them.

Like any occupation with relatively Lowe requirements to join there is just as wide a range from success to failure. Id say the average full time agent (primary job, min 30 hrs/week) is reasonable at around 35k (from glassdoor data).
