Dead Birds??
Hello everyone, I have just moved down here from Massachusetts, we are loving it!! It is true what is said about Southern Hospitality!!! It does exist. We have been warmly welcomed here. I just have a question...we have only been here 4 weeks and I have found 2 dead birds in my yard and when we were in downtown Greenville the other night, I noticied 2 dead birds......seems like a lot of dead birds in 4 weeks!! Is that odd? Lived in MA. for 22 years and maybe saw that many. Is there something that would be making the birds sick? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Could be West Nile virus. The state used to have a number to call so they could come pick up the bird to be tested. Don't know if they do that anymore.

Were they baby blue birds? My neighbor and I noticed about 4 total about a month or so ago. Thought it was strange. Maybe stray cats or some other wildlife as we are in the sticks.

I've seen a few dead baby birds, but that is most likely a result of other birds attacking the nest. I have also noticed quite a few more hawks than usual lately, if that is significant.

No, not baby birds....bigger I am not sure what kind though. Yes in MA. there was someone you could call to have the bird tested for West Nile Virus.

Don't touch dead birds.
Here is a link ...scroll to the bottom and see DEAD ANIMAL REMOVAL in the city of Greenville. If you are outside of the city, they should be able to tell you what to do. There are several viruses that can be contracted from handling infected animals. If a serious problem is developing with the bird population in the area, the sooner it is reported and investigated by the profesisonals, the healthier we all will be. Good luck.......

Hey Ackgirl, let us know if the department I referenced is helpful or if they tell you to contact another agency. Also, let us know what they say is causing the birds to die...... Good luck!

Definitely not normal to see that many dead birds. Hope you are able to get some answers. If so, please share your findings here! I am originally from MA, too and I agree that it is a much friendlier (and sunnier) place to live!
