While we're on the subject of poor service, I'd like to go on record to state that I've given Smoke on the Water three (3) tries and have experienced horrible service each time, so I'm done with them. It's too bad, too, as I absolutely LOVE their food. I still stop by their tent at the various festivals and get it that way, but I'm not going to go in and sit down and be expected to pay a gratuity for poor service.

I know it's not German, but y'all may want to give Addy's Dutch Cafe and Restaurant a try. Let's face it, the Dutch don't exactly have a cuisine of their own - a lot is borrowed from the French and the German cuisines.

We lived in Spartanburg for two years and went to Moe's frequently. We loved their food. I would say the worst places to eat in Spartanburg were all the fried chicken places especially the convenience stores that had Aunt Somebody's Fried Chicken and when you open the door of the place, you get hit in the face with the hot greasy smell of fried chicken and fried chicken livers. Long John Silver's is also pretty greasy, but I would say the good restaurants definitely outweigh the bad. We live back in the Midwest now, but I miss Shogun's, O'Charley's, Carrabba's, California Dreamin'.

[quote=SCmoes;758432] Obviously we are a long distance away from Mexico, and so as a result the food, regardless of whether or not you want to call it Mexican, is not going to be very authentic. In fact, it is catered to those who live in this area.
I don't get it, there are more Mexicans here than in all of Yucatan... It's just that the Mexicans here are either working / running the Mexican ( and fast food) resturants, not openly eating in them unless you are in a Tacquitoria tucked in the corner of a trailer park or near Ashville Highway in Spartanburg......

Just a quick follow up, just returned from our trip and wanted to clarify what the AAA guide wrote about the restaurant: They said was a deli/restaurant combo with a very limited German menu. Unfortunately time did not allow for me to seek the place out, maybee next time.

In my one experience with Ristorante Bergamo I was not too satisfied. I was probably 15 or so at the time, and was wearing a hat. I stepped inside the restaurant and was immediately told to remove it...not asked, told. I'm no idiot, and i'm polite. I would have removed it myself, I didn't need to be told. The food was pretty good, but I haven't been back. I don't like dealing with A-holes. (maybe a little harsh, but true)

Sorry for the Delay
Okay, so to address a couple of questions and comments:
Rested Traveler:
"I prefer their guac over Moe's (no offense, SCMoes, just a personal preference).
SCmoes: I've been wondering for a while why there isn't a Moe's in Travelers Rest yet or at least near Cherrydale yet. What's taking y'all so long?"
I agree with you over the guac, I'm only allowed to "modify" the recipe so much, but it is rather bland. I'm not really sure why there isn't a Moes in Travelers Rest yet. My boss has, i believe, 4 different restaurants to look over right now, so I'd imagine he just doesn't want a 5th at the moment.
Sonrise:
"If you're really just a prep cook"
I can honestly say that's all I am. You are very, very much entitled to you opinion, as am I. With that in mind, I am sorry if you felt I attacked you personally, I was aiming for your opinion.
YankeeinSC:

You have a really good point about the number of Mexicans being in and around South Carolina. I think though, that the reason Mexican Food in South Carolina isn't really "Mexican" is because of money. Truly authentic food from anywhere can sometimes rub the wrong way with potential customers. It seems most conceivable to me that the restaurants cater to the local residents to attract more business.
Thank you guys

Papas&Beer
If you're in Asheville/Hendersonville area, Papas & Beer is a great Mexican restaurant. Very fresh ingredients...a change from the usual run together slop.

That has been my experience each and every time I've gone there. I've given it three tries and no more (three strikes and you're out is my own personal rule of thumb). I honestly do not know how they remain in business with such poor service. There's nothing to make you feel welcome and right at home quite like being completely ignored.
