I have heard servers complain about their tips when they work crappy shifts, but in the restaurants I have worked at, if you were a good server, you got the prime shifts, if you were not so good, you might not get as many shifts, or not get the good $$ shifts. So like any other job, the harder and more efficiently you worked, the more money you made, etc., that is the way it should be.

That being said, this really has nothing to do with the fact that it is a great thing that a storefront that has been empty for at least the 2+ years I have been here is being filled by a new business that I think will do well in downtown.

Well, they could put a nuclear plant there or a refinery or a trash-to-energy incinerator- they have high-paying jobs. . Of course, that would kill any appeal the downtown has! (yes, I'm being facetious)

Well, except for the Downtown incinerator, I actually lived in a city that had one!

I don't get what people were thinking was going to go into a downtown retail area? Of course, those jobs aren't the highest paying, but if you think the people who work at the Hyatt, Loose Lucy's, or Mast General Store are all making 75k/year, you are sadly mistaken. As someone who worked almost 15 years in the industry and did everything from dishwasher to being an admin. to the owner (payroll/HR/ordering and dealing with vendors), not because I was super-brilliant, but because I would ask the owner "How do I learn to do that?". Seriously. I was always amazed that most people I worked with (and complained the most) would never do that. Coming home smelling like old food every night was a great motivator! But then I found that a lot of people who worked in the industry (at least where I worked) treated their jobs as something they tolerated while looking for a "real job". I also have seen waitstaff make great money and poor money - but the poor performers would generally be poor workers, especially after realizing that serving is very, very hard work. But I have also seen as Sonrise said, good workers stuck on bad shifts. I'd love to see better wages, but will it happen?

All that said, bottom line is Carolina Ale will not only employ wait and kitchen staff, but managerial staff, construction people to build the place, give business to suppliers, it will at least bring in some tax revenue and will hopefully revitalize what is now a bit of an eyesore.

Of course, it may totally flop, too. We'll see.

I've waited tables in NY, NJ, Fl, CA and SC. I know of what I speak. The scenario that I painted is quite common. If and when I open a restaurant, it will almost 100% be a QSR (quick service restaurant), i.e. Chipotle, Zaxby's, Panera Bread, etc. No waitstaff to burden a customer with tipping and helps keep costs down from an owners perspective as well. However, if I did have a full service restaurant I would pay the servers minimum wage plus tips, because it's the humane thing to do. I personally would not fell good about my employees walking home from a lunch shift with $15 in their pocket.

I'm still really hurt by your snarky comment, since you're the last person I would have expected that from.

Sonrise, I'm laughing at this because I meant my post in a joking manner....not snide/snarky/snippy. I've seen many of your post and know that you aren't that thin skinned. If you are, send me your address and I'll mail you a box of Kleenex.
