I'm not technically retired but am for all intents and purposes and came to Greenville to be near my grandkids, as have many of the people I've met since moving here.
As for making friends, it does take a while, but there are certainly places to do it. Greenville has an excellent club for newcomers called Newcomers Club of Greater Greenville. There are monthly coffees and many, many types of activities each month for both women and couples. I haven't joined it yet, but Greenville also has a group called Senior Action, which seems to have a lot of activities, tours and even a workout facility members can participate in. The YMCA has seniors activities and tours as well. There's also a website called
www.meetup.com that has local groups in all sorts of topics of interest. And there are adult continuing education classes through the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program at Furman University. Those are interesting, fun, and a great place to meet others.
Becoming active in a church and volunteering will also help you in developing new relationships. Greenville has many festivals and is always looking for volunteers, as are the many charities throughout the area.
I think it's a great place to retire, if you don't have to depend on public transportation. And you can be as active as you want and/or are able to be.
