Default Greenville Retirees

Are there many retirees in Greenville County? Transplants or not?

Any retirees care to comment on how they like living in Greenville and is it easy to make friends?

There are a good amount of retirees in Greenville County. The mountains just north of the city, have mushroomed with upscale developments in the last several years and most are filled with retirees....most are built around golf courses. Gary Player moved here to retire, along with his family and company. He has developed the Cliffs at Mountain Park. There are multiple Cliffs developments.

Downtown has also seen a surge in retirees looking for the condo / urban life.

Don't know how to find the exact numbers of retirees moving here, but it has been significant.

I'm not technically retired but am for all intents and purposes and came to Greenville to be near my grandkids, as have many of the people I've met since moving here.

As for making friends, it does take a while, but there are certainly places to do it. Greenville has an excellent club for newcomers called Newcomers Club of Greater Greenville. There are monthly coffees and many, many types of activities each month for both women and couples. I haven't joined it yet, but Greenville also has a group called Senior Action, which seems to have a lot of activities, tours and even a workout facility members can participate in. The YMCA has seniors activities and tours as well. There's also a website called www.meetup.com that has local groups in all sorts of topics of interest. And there are adult continuing education classes through the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) program at Furman University. Those are interesting, fun, and a great place to meet others.

Becoming active in a church and volunteering will also help you in developing new relationships. Greenville has many festivals and is always looking for volunteers, as are the many charities throughout the area.

I think it's a great place to retire, if you don't have to depend on public transportation. And you can be as active as you want and/or are able to be.

Interesting that you just posted this thread this week. Take a look at this article that just came out this week.....AARP ranked Greenville as a top ten place to retire.......

Sounds like Greenville's got a lot going for it. I'd really like to retire there, but DH is concerned about making friends our age (60's) and wants to go to a 55+ community. Personally, I'd rather be in a vibrant city like Greenville.

Thank you both for your input. Anyone else?
