Commute between Rock Hill and Spartanburg
I am considering living in Rock Hill but working in Spartanburg. Would like to be near Charlotte and have found the Rock Hill area to be the closest community I like. The commute is about 55 miles each way and was wondering if there was any advice out there on traffic and convenient routes or any other thoughts?

BT2000,
The commute from Rock Hill to Spartanburg will be 65 to 90 miles based on the route you take (interstate [77, 485, 85] or backroads). This commute could be well over an hour (one way). Google Maps calculates the trip more than an hour and a half with any route one takes.
I commuted from Simpsonville to Gaffney for about 4 months (about a year ago). This took about 50+ minutes one way via 85 and was just exhausting.
My advice: life is too short (especially if you have spouse/kids) - consider living in Spartanburg/Greer/Greenville - the quality of life here is great and your commute will be tolerable.
Consider the cost of gas with your commute (as it may rise in the future). Also, consider asking a similar question in the York and Lancaster Counties sub-forum.

My son attended Winthrop for a year and going to Rock Hill from the Simpsonville area was a chore. There is just no economical way to get there.
I ditto drfranklin's suggestion.

We just drove to Rock Hill from Simpsonville last week. Exit 85 onto 198/5 at Blacksburg. We were shocked to see a brand new, very empty 5 lane road almost the entire way there. It was a very easy drive for us, under 2 hours total, but it would be much less from Spartanburg.

I known at least two people who have done the whole live in Rock Hill/work in Spartanburg thing. One did it b/c all her relatives lived in York Co. and she didn't want to move; the other did it b/c he and his wife and kids relocated from out of state, liked Charlotte and wanted to be close to it. Both of these people hated the drive five days a week. The later eventually just moved his family to the Greer/Taylors area of Greenville County and the last I checked, his family was doing great. He told me once that he thought moving to the South from PA that he needed to be near Charlotte to be in a nice, clean area with good schools, lots to do and a good number of transplants like him. Then he was pleased to find that all of these things can be found in Greenville, which is basically like Charlotte in many ways just on a smaller scale.
