Sykes Enterprises has announced plans to create 250 new jobs in Greenwood: Business Expansion Brings Hundreds Of Jobs - Greenville News Story - WYFF Greenville (http://www.wyff4.com/news/20304170/detail.html - broken link)
Yep....and we desperately need to get our folks employed here. I have a family member who is a training manager with Sykes. He had formerly worked for two local manufacturing firms which downsized. He is employed at a little more than 1/2 of his original pay before being downsized but he is grateful for the opportunity to find work here. Relocating would be difficult right now because his father is ill and his wife has a job locally. And there is no guarantee of finding work elsewhere, or being able to sell their house if he and his wife did find work. I think that is the situation a lot of folks are finding themselves in...... it's hard all around. I hope that Sykes will continue to do well and provide work for our hurting folks. BUT..... I hope that the city and residents of Greenwood will keep their eye on the BIG PICTURE..... we need jobs paying more than $8.50/hour to employ all of these college graduates we keep matriculating in the great state of S.C. We need more corporations paying taxes and employing folks in the $45,000 + range. We've got the talent to fill the jobs if the State will work to bring companies in to create them.
Unforntunately, Sykes is not a good company to work for and no one should get excited when they come to town, no matter how many jobs they promise. The seriously underpay their employees and they are taking advantage of the down economy and people are willing to take what they can get nowadays. If you are on what is called the "Global Team" then you are set. They even take AIG like trips on Sykes dime. But if you are an account manager, agent or team manager....good luck. It's these people that do all of the work while the Global Team has all the perks. They have gotten so good at covering up all of these lawsuits from state governtments and here's the reason for the suits:
First they approach a city, usually a small town and promise to bring x amount of jobs to the area. The town/city gets excited about the jobs coming to help out their community and do whatever Sykes asks of them. The city foots the bill for revamping the facilty that Sykes will use and too many other things to list, and it usually costs the city millions. The city believes its o.k. because they belive they will get a good return on their investment. Sykes in turn promise to stay for X amount of years, provide X amount of jobs. They promote, hire and train and pay the people pennies. The people quit due to the fact that they are being asked to do so much and getting paid so little. They file unemployement and then the city starts to say "Why are we having such and large group of people quitting Sykes?" When the city starts to investigate, then Sykes start tranferring whatever business that was in that city somewhere else, mostly out of America. Meanwhile the city has no return on investment, they have wasted their money, um tax payers money and Sykes is gone. Google "Sykes Enterprises lawsuits" and you will see what they are doing all over America.
