Will Greenville come out of recession faster than rest of US?
Thanks to all of the posts by g-man, we have been enlightened of over 500 new jobs announced and several stalled large projects that have started back up again.
Could this be a sign that the upstate may being seeing a light at the end of the tunnel before the rest of the country?

I think so. Despite what a few negative posters have tried to say, Greenville is in a great position to come out of this recession faster than most metros. There was a ranking within the last few months which included Greenville as one of the top five metros to weather the economic storm.
There are supposedly some projects in the works, too. Hopefully we will hear some positive news in the coming months.

That said, it is possible that Greenville could come out of the recession quicker than many other areas of the South and West. Especially when compared to markets who's expansion was largely based on new housing. Greenville will pick-up once demand for manufactured goods starts to uptick. Although, don't look for that to happen short term. Employment numbers will get worse in the next few months, even with the addition of a few hundred jobs here, and there. And while stalled projects are getting financing back online, don't look for a bevy of new construction in the near future.
The insanely high unemployment rates in SC are going to take a looong time to fix.

I don't see what South Carolina's unemployment has to do with Greenville. What's happening in another part of the state is irrelevant when we're talking about economic conditions in Greenville. Apples and oranges.

I believe there is a good chance because of the abundance of cheap non english speaking labor in the Greenville area. Fortunately much of the infrastructure that employs these workers continues to do well. Times are tough on these employers too though, they have been forced to lower wages to 25 cents an hour and can not provide many of the benifits to the foreign workers they are accustomed to providing them. Like bread and water or 20 hour work days. For now they have to make due with 23 hour work days and water until the economy picks up. I applaud these employers for taking care of their employees during these tough economic times.

IF the demand for manufacturing related goods begins to pick up........then because there is a significant manufacturing industry presence here in Greenville.......I can definitely see Greenville recovering from the recession faster then some other cities. As it stands right now there is a significant number of people here in Greenville who are unemployed and it is going to take a lot to turn that problem around.
A recovery from the recession is one thing........sustaining that recovery so that we are not hit hard like this the next time a recession happens is another story. It takes more then a dependence on manufacturing and healthcare jobs to sustain the recovery.

I want to understand your point of view a little better. Can you give me an example of a state that was not hit hard by this recession, besides the small states that nobody wants to move too. One that has the kind of economy that does not depend on just two industries.
