What industry would do well in the upstate?
When I look around the upstate I see that we have an auto industry, a nuclear power plant, a large University (plus several smaller schools), we have a tire company, a GE division, a large contracting company, a minor league baseball team, a big hospital system, lots of restaurants and retail outlets and probably a bunch stuff I missed too.
My question for everyone is this: What industry do you think the upstate is lacking, or better yet, what industry is lacking that would do well in the upstate? I'm not talking about a taco time restaurant or a tractor supply store, I'm talking industry. What industry is missing in the upstate that would provide these high paying, high quality jobs that we keep hearing are in the rest of the country.
My next question will be "how can we get them here", but let's start by figuring out what we are missing.

My first thought is non-profits. With the cost of living here I would think they would do well here cutting costs. Probably not considered an industry but I made my living at one for over 10 years. Some of the pay scales they pay would fit in better here too.

I'd say biotech, but that field is kind of played out and oversaturated even though the regions that got a jump on the industry early on are doing well for themselves.

What type of non-profits are you interested in? There are lots of non-profit organizations here, specializing in a variety of interests.

There actually is a biotech presence in the Greenville area, although a stronger presence would not be a bad thing.

Good one Akhenaton06!
Would pharmaceutical fall into biotech or is that another possible attranctant?
Did anyone see a few weeks back where the gov't is going to build a Biological Safety Level 4 (BSL-4) facility in Kansas. This is a designation that allows for the study of the most deadly, most contagious diseases known, diseases for which there are no cures. Right smack dab in the middle of tornado ally. Genius - but anyway, this facility would probably be a good economy booster.
Any more?

Here is a document highlighting some of the local and regional biotech and pharmaceutical companies and resources already located in the Upstate. As explained, there is a solid effort underway to lure more biotech research and development companies to the area.

Thanks for sharing - I was surprised when it said
20 pharmaceutical-related companies in the region employ approximately 2,700

You did not mention the airplane repair center at Donaldson, Kemet Mgr. Or Cryovac. Cryovac is 32 acres under roof, approx. 1200 employees and is the worlds largest plastic manugacturing company under roof. JMTCW
