I wish I could tell you more about the side streets but we did not travel on them. Overall, clean and small.

We are moving to the are from Long Island, NY and CAN'T wait to get there.
We have friends that moved there 10 years ago and have since had 9 of their friends move to the area.

I've been watching the growth of downtown Greenville for a while (we're looking to relocate to GVL as well).
I don't understand how increased growth automatically means increased crime. It's not like anyone (except upper, upper middle class and young professionals who do the roommate thing) can afford to live in these new, upscale lofts/condos.
We wanted to move to downtown Greenville but can not afford the condos/lofts. And we have a yearly income much higher than the median income.
Crime is usually generated by lower income level folks and since they can not afford to live in downtown, it's not like there is going to be an influx of street people.
Am I missing something? I'm always willing to be enlightened.

I'm with ya. They say the same thing here in Charlotte. The kind of people relocating here are usually ones that improve the community, not bring it down. Yet they blame the rise in crime on population growth. I can only assume that it is from the PD being stretched thin (PD not growing at a rate as quick at the pop) .

There isn't a rise in crime in downtown Greenville. It's actually dropped dramatically over the last 20 years. There used to be prostitutes, drugs, etc. but not anymore.

I don't think church has anything to do with many downtown stores being closed on Sundays. Rather, it is because most of those stores are locally owned and some of the owners choose to be closed that day to spend time with their families. If you'll notice, the non-locally owned retail stores downtown are open on Sunday. Same goes for restaurants.
Besides, if "church" truly dictated store hours, why are all of the stores in the suburbs open all day Sunday?!?
It sounds like you erroneously believe that church still dictates life throughout the South. You might find that in small rural towns, but not in larger population centers like Greenville.

I don't think there is really a need for stores to stay open later than 6, I mean, don't most stores close around 8 usually? Not really much of a difference. How much business do you think they do between the hours of 6 and 8?(when most people are enjoying dinner) Especially in downtown when the majority of people come either to eat or to catch some sort of show,(peace center, bi-lo etc.)
As far as them being open on Sundays, I find it to be kind of nice!(mostly because I work downtown all week and that is my only full day off.) People have lives and its really good to take a break once a week and relax, be it for religious reasons or otherwise. It does take getting used to but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.
The restaurant I work for would open on Sundays, but then we would have to pay thousands more for an extra liquor license and there is no guarantee their would be a great return on that investment. so it has nothing to do with religion in our case, and I would bet it is similar in many downtown establishments.

Not around here in FL. Many people work until 6 or later. Our church choir practice starts at 7, and a surprising number of people come straight from work, still wearing ID badges. It's a sign of the times that '9 to 5' jobs run until 7 PM.

I don't get the relevance? so you want to go to touristy shops in the downtown area of your city at 7 when you get off work?

In downtown Greenville, the stores should really stay open past 6 especially on Friday and Saturday nights. There are more people downtown at 10pm most nights than any other time of the day.
