Ok there is one - Oysters on the West End...but its not that great. Any idea why there are so few here? Is there a city ordinance preventing them?

Soby's Loft also has the rooftop bar.
Most rooftops in downtown Greenville are private use for the lofts above the shops.

what a great idea, though! the weather now would be perfect, and the heights of the buildings downtown are ideal for terrace bars. i hope more places catch on!

I agree, a rooftop bar or two would be great. There are a couple in Charleston, and they are very popular.

it might be because there are a lot of residences above the businesses downtown, the noise could get bad if you were too close to a rooftop bar, of course there are condos directly across from oysters, so who knows??

Great idea, I have enjoyed rooftop bars in other cities. Maybe some entrepreneur will see this and start a new bar downtown.

Personally, I'd like to see a quality rooftop restaurant before a bar. A separate bar could be included, but something less loud and a bit more romantic would be my preference. I love the view overlooking the rooftops in downtown Greenville. There are many interesting little privately owned structures up there. They look like fun getaways to a totally different place.

While on the subject, does anyone here remember hearing about the days when the Poinsett Hotel's rooftop was a popular hotspot for parties?

The Cazbah that opened up in downtown Greer has a rooftop area for dining/drinking. I haven't been there yet, but I like the Cazbah downtown for something different.

Wasn't there announcement in the paper within the past few months about a planned rooftop sports bar with a retractable roof? Or did I dream it?

That is Carolina Ale House, which is only a two-story restaurant/bar with a retractable roof overhead. Rooftop bars and restaurants are literally on the roof.
