Do you have children and were schools a consideration for you in your move? Your post was so very helpful to the OP and so many others, including myself.
My kids are not school age anymore But I will tell you the house we are hoping to buy is suppose to have some of the best schools in the district and they are rated, for the most part, very well. My realtor even mentioned that about the schools. Personally, it really doesn't mean much to me since the kids aren't living with us anymore. People talk about resale value in the future - that doesn't mean much to me either, maybe if we plan to move after a few years, but we plan on sticking around for a long time (in current home 21 yrs) By that time, who the heck knows what the schools in a certain area will be like. When my kids were in middle school they went to an A rated school - I just learned that they were rated and F school due to FCAT scores - plus, the climate has changed down here radically and does so each and every day it seems - another reason I can't wait to get up there!!!!!
I had laugh about rating crime areas with the amount of bars you see on the windows - there's a LOT of homes with bars down in SOFLA where I live and not in any so called crime areas - if that were the case, I'd think maybe the old people a few doors down might be in to something! You can go into areas with half million dollar homes and more and see bars - I guess you have to look at the entire aesthetics of the house here, not just for bars ; )
Glad I could ad some info that was helpful to others
I've driven down White Horse many a time and have never felt threatened to drive there in any way. Yes, there are more run down areas around there, but I've gone down areas of Wade Hampton and found areas that could easily be over in White Horse, such as entire strip malls empty and abandoned. How many Winn Dixies do you know sitting vacant in "nicer areas?" I guess it also may depend on how you view other social and economic groups. Maybe I'm just not familiar with what I haven't seen in this area, I really know nothing more about the area than what I see in the quick few minutes I drive through it. I know from reading posts on this forum that the Berea area isn't good to find a home in, but when looking for a home, technically, at last from what I found, the Furman area is really the Berea area as well - please correct me if I am wrong. There are some very nice homes around that area, but yet, the area does go down not too far away.
The areas you may think are safe, you never know what's lurking where. I live in a very nice neighborhood (not in SC yet) and my area is notorious for grow houses, and you'd never know it was happening in this area, that is until you hear about the bust on TV.
You can go on line and see the crime stats for any area in Greenville. You can even put in an exact addres and see what types of crimes have happened around that address. I've looked at addresses all over Greenville - no certain area is immuned, there just may be more activity in certain areas than others.
I think the key is homework and not jumping in to anything. I feel sorry for people who HAVE to move and have 2-3 weeks to find a house to relocate to - luckily I have no set time I have to move and thankfully, this time has given me more insight in to the future city I'll be calling home soon!
You sound like you are coming from the same area I did, with the grow houses.Let me guess Pt.St. Lucie or Stuart. I am in Travelers Rest now and could not be happier!
Do you have kids in school? If so, how are the schools in Travelers Rest? My husband keeps wanting to move somewhere warmer than here in central PA. He's a mechanic and often works outside and would like somewhere that he won't freeze fast to the pavement (he literally did last winter!). We have kids that would be in middle school by the time we would make a move in a couple years (after our oldest graduates HS here). So schools are a huge concern for us, as well as safe neighborhoods (but then I guess that's a concern for everyone, right?).
