Greenville is close to a lot of lager cites. I was wondering what towns are your favorite to visit. (visit for fun, not because of relatives)

My guess would be these towns in this order

1 Charlotte (because its large and close by)
2 Asheville (because its weird and close by)
3 Knoxville (because its not to far and your already going to Asheville)
4 Atlanta (just to say you been there once?)

I hate, hate, hate, going through Atlanta on I75 let alone going there just for fun! The traffic is awful.
I would say Charlotte from the cities on your list. It's a nice enough town. I am planning to go to Asheville Thurs. for the big craft show, but I doubt I will stick around to check out anything else. Heck, I've been here since Dec. and I still haven't checkout out all of the surrounding areas of Greenville!

I don't think many people in Greenville travel 3 hours via beautiful but rugged I-40 to visit Knoxville, unless they are either UT fans or have family there. Generally, I would guess more people in the Upstate visit the Great Smoky Mountains than Knoxville.

You'd be surprised how many people in Greenville frequently visit Atlanta. It is by far the largest and most amenity-filled metropolis in the region, not to mention the fact that it is less than 2.5 hours away via a straight shot on I-85. Traffic in the metro (ATL) is dreadful, but there are plenty of reasons to visit Atlanta as a Greenville resident.

Charlotte is a bit closer than Atlanta, but is definitely less a tourist destination and is more business oriented overall. There is a connection between many residents in Greenville and Charlotte.

Asheville has long been a favorite getaway for people living in the Upstate. It has a healthy tourist draw, with beautiful mountains surrounding a city full of quaint and quirky shops and restaurants, alongside a healthy dose of visibly apparent history.

With that said, my personal favorite getaway town is the quaint artisanal mountain village called Highlands, North Carolina.

Hey Skyliner,

I will be visiting for my first time possible this next month. I was thinking I'd land in Charlotte, travel thru Greenville, Asheville then end up in Knoxville. Do you think this I-40 ruggedness will be full of snow and treachery?

I'd say you probably wouldn't need to worry until some time in December. The elevations aren't that high.

I've been thinking about this, and I like to go to Aiken. That is where I want to go on my next little getaway.

We like to run down to Charleston. 3 hours and we are sitting at Poogan's Porch having a fried chicken salad or shrimp and grits.
A trip to Columbia for the day allows you to visit the state museum and the Riverbanks Zoo.
I can not imagine wanting to fight the Atlanta traffic for anything they have to offer.

Never looked into Columbia. Nice place to visit?

I noticed no takers yet for Knoxville. Surely people love that town.

Columbia has some nice resturants and some really nice places to tour.
My wife likes to go to Pigeon Forge for the outlet stores but we have never traveled to Knoxville.
