Greenville is one of the most walkable places I've found in the South. Due to comfortable temps much of the year (spring and fall are spectacular) walking is common here. Downtown is without a doubt THE most pedestrian friendly in the south. The neighborhoods around downtown (Cleveland Park, West End, North Main, Overbrook, Augusta Street, Hampton Pinckney, etc) are extremely walkable as well and easily connect to downtown, as there are very few old industrial areas to separate the neighborhoods from the downtown core.
In addition to the above listed areas, Greenville has been building one of the best greenway systems in the south....a greenway that connects beautiful parks downtown, with burbs to the north and south. The greenway is for walking, jogging or biking.
Throw in the numerous bikelanes and national recognized cycling scene and Greenville comes up a winner as regards walking / biking.

I grew up in central NJ and have lived in the Greenville area since 1994. Wouldn't go back to NJ for anything. My whole family is here now.
Greenville overall reminds me somewhat of central NJ, just much better. Not sure about particular towns, never really thought about that. I grew up just a couple miles outside of Trenton so my view of central NJ maybe be a good bit different than yours depending on what part of central NJ you are in.

grew up in Fanwood, live in No. Plfd., Edison, raised family in So. Plfd., then moved to Readington Twp. the most beautiful and expensive. Downtown Greenville sounds nice, but can you live close enough to enjoy town without driving there? I hope to grow old there, so need amenities within walking/biking distance. Also husband in paraplegic, so getting in and out of the car to go a few miles to enjoy downtown is pointless. Are there places to buy a house near enough?

coming in two weeks. Will stay for 5 days, then pick up the girls and bring them home for thanksgiving. I hope to find a RE agent who knows the neighborhoods and surrounding towns. I'll just scout out for now.

I grew up in Elizabeth and have family in Raritan. Off the top of my head, I might say Flemington. However, I moved from NJ to TX 19 years ago, so I don't know what Flemington is like, now, but it was "quaint" back then.

not to advertise, but I used sheri sanders as my agent when I went to buy a home here in Easley, she's awesome and easy to find too, she's on citydata! I would recommend her or Pat Grissinger(<sp?) both awesome people as well as realtors, and regulars to the greenville forum here!

We just recently moved from western NJ to the Greenville area because of relocation with my company - and the traffic and taxes. We don't have kids and have found the people to be great. We try and attend the events that are available(Fall for Greenville, Greer's Octoberfest, Masquerade ball) and we've met people that way. Also, if you volunteer you'll be able to meet people. I don't know if you're a church-goer (we're not) but I've found people in the south are very active in their church and that's often a good way to meet people. Good luck and enjoy!
