I can give plenty of good info on Saluda Lake - I live in in White Oak Hills and my house backs up to Saluda Lake (it's about three hunded yards though through woods to the lake so obviously not lake front). Back in the 80's I was pretty serious into compettive water skiing and went to a ski school out at Jimmy Durhams Ski School, and at that time the lake was perfect - secluded, calm, and the water surface was ideal for water skiing since the lake only maybe 1000 feet wide at its widest point and wind is abated by heavy trees around the lake. Lately though the lake has a serious sediment problem. The last time I was actually on the lake was 2003, and when we put our boat in from saluda lake landing, the water level was about 2 feet (barely enough to cover the draft of the boat) and once we got into the "channel" (if you can call it that), the water at its deepest level (according to the depth finder) was 27 feet. Back in the 80's sediment was a problem on the very north side of the lake (where the salude river flows into it) but wasn't a problem anywhere else). Now its a major issue - I can hear boat traffic from my deck and its the exception to hear any boat traffic out there at all - primarly because of the lake level I'm assuming. It's a shame because its the lake has a great layout and I have so many good memories of it from childhood. Supposedly there is a dredging project going but I have yet to see any sign that its actually taking place. I still feel that this place is a hidden gem as its the only decent sized lake within 15 minutes of downtown greenville. If the dredging project ever bears fruit, I think that Saluda Lake might have an excellent chance of being revitalized. If they could get the dredging project going and a few developments started up, the lake might just make a comeback, although I don't see this happening in the near future. With Greenville growing so much and the lake so close to downtown, it's just too beautiful a lake for land developers not to take notice and start to put some money into it. Although I would love to see it remain the secluded little spot it is right now, with some major development dollars pumped into it its going to continue to rot on the vine.

lol I live here now, there is plenty of boat traffic, it is about 12 ft deep under my dock, not too bad as the dock is on the edge of the water. you are right about the dredging project though, haven't seen anything since I have been here, and it is a shame. although I am glad it is secluded from the world in most respects, I enjoy fishing off my dock without another person in sight some days. but actually as I type now I hear a few boats out there. i'm literally like 30 ft from the water, so I hear it all. I know for a fact there are investors trying to buy up land on the lake, i'm glad my landlord won't sell, lol
I drive through white oaks to get back to where my house is, howdy neighbor

Considering moving to this lake as well...the sediment problem concerns me! Previous posts have been great, any other advice or comfort?
Thanks!

I'm an avid boater and have boated Saluda Lake since 1997. It is indeed a sediment-filled lake - HOWEVER - the channel is easy to find and once you find it you can have no worries of hitting anything for the several miles the lake is long. The area is indeed in disrepair and many of the docks are on the verge of ruin. Many of the structures on the lake should be condemned, but there are also many new nice houses going up.

From a boater's standpoint, the lake is annoying, but not impassable. If you want to live on a lake in Greenville, this is your choice. If it's just the upstate, look at Lake Lyman, Hartwell, or Keowee (million dollar homes).

very few, you have to search, I think I got very lucky finding a rental property on the lake, but my landlord just rented her other house last month, and a few months ago I saw one on craigslist on the other side(pickens/easley) so they are out there

Default Saluda Lake

Its the best kept secret in Greenville. 6 miles from downtown, and most people do not know it is here !! Lake levels at my end are DEEP. A just announced dredging project ( October 2008 ) will be great for the lake, but might result in more boat traffic. Property values are soaring !!! The view is great, and the water is clear !!

Default Saluda Lake

Are the any areas the public can access to fish? Or is it all private property?
