If only I had photos to share. It is a lovely small lake that I have spent multiple days at while visiting friends who used to live there. It was a virtual "hidden paradise" in those days (approximately 10-15 years ago). I am trying to think of what hospital is nearby, but the closest I can recall is St. Francis in downtown Greenville, which is about a 15 minute drive away. Shopping nearby consists of a Hamrick's (clothes), Sav-a-Lot (discount foods), and a little futher out you have an Ingle's (supermarket). There are plenty of other choices not too far away, but I can't name them all and don't recall exactly where they are. This lake is not too far from Furman University, which has the most beautiful campus I have seen in the U.S. You can enjoy strolls around the school's lake, outdoor concerts by the lake, and plenty of other activities year-round, including sports and festivals. A couple of the more popular festivals are the Greenville Scottish Games & Highland Festival (broken link) and Hill Skills.

Isn't there some silt issues? I heard you couldn't boat there safely for many years, and possibly still?

None that I am aware of. There were boats out there last time I was at the lake. I am definitely not the authority on the lake though.

the landlord of the property told me there is water skiing and boating, and I assume she would not lie, also she lives right next to the house she is renting so she probably knows

I would do some further investigation on it for sure. My boss has been here for 35 years and we both are boaters. I know he said stay away from Saluda. His comment was that over the years the silt has continued to fill the lake and that for some reason dredging wasn't allowed or something like that. He said you are still allowed to launch, but most of the lake is no deeper than about 3' now, which makes for rough waterskiing.
Maybe it has been dredged in recent years?
Like I said, I could be wrong, but worth investigating. Call DHEC or state wildlife authorities, etc.

I just re-read your original post. At first I thought you were buying the cottage. But it sounds as though you're renting which is much less commitment.
Sorry to keep coming up with reasons to not move to the lake, but it is located in a part of town that will require all your shopping, etc. to be done in less desireable places. Look at some of the other threads regarding crime and look at the link to the crime map and how that relates to this location.
If I were a single guy looking for a lake cottage, I would certainly consider it. But, if I had a family or were a single femail I'd think twice.

If I had to drive a few minutes further to shop in a nicer place that is not a problem, I do not have a family, only a girlfriend. also, where have you lived before, all is relative, so undesirable to some may not be a big deal to others? I am moving from NY, so I feel as though maybe a bad neighborhood to you might not be the same to me????

That could be true. My comment of "undesirable" is in the context of the Greenville area. I was born and raised in New Orleans, so that's my barometer. Go to gcgis.org and pull up the crime maps and study them. Realize that most of your convenient shopping is going to be along hwy25 (south of the lake).
I'm sure lots of nice friendly people live around Lake Saluda. I didn't mean to come off this strong about the crime. I simply felt you should look at the crime map yourself. Also, the fact that you are renting and have no kids makes a world of difference.
Best of luck with your move.
