Y'all are making me homesick for Greenville, and I don't even live there yet! We'll be building in a couple years on our land in Traveler's Rest, but it was downtown G'ville that really sold us on the area. For all you pros- I'm shopping for a (reasonable) DSLR- any recommendations? Sorry- didn't mean to hijack a beautiful thread...

I have a Canon 350D and I'm sure you can pick one up for a reasonable price nowadays. The 400D is pretty nice - has a built-in sensor cleaning mechanism. Nikon recently released their D40, a very reasonably priced DSLR. The camera bodies are coming down nowadays...it's the lenses that eat you alive. I'd recommend shopping online with a reputable dealer like BH Photo Video or someone similar. You'll never get a good deal at Best Buy or Circuit City on good camera equipment.

Well i don't know when i'll be making it out that way, so I might not have any pics of those areas for a while. Haven't had anywhere over that way I've needed to be, so you know...

Oh, I'm hoping to get a nikon d40 soon. It seems to be a great camera, especially for the price. I'm moving up from my current camera, a sony dsc-w7. I'm read for better pictures and more reliability. (i've had to have it fixed twice now, same problem both times)

[quote=Skyliner;786948]Hi everyone! I know it is hard to get a feel for a place without being there in person, but sometimes photos can help give a better idea of what to expect. While I have many photos stored online, I'll start with the ones I shot yesterday morning and late afternoon. Sunday mornings typically are the quietest moments to enjoy downtown if you prefer more serenity. At any rate, enjoy these, add your own if you want to, or any comments or questions you have.

I have recently joined the site and your photos are just beautiful. We are from Ohio and are greatly hoping to move to South Carolina within the next year. We have been heavily exploring the Charleston area but your pictures have sparked serious interest in Greenville. What can you all tell me about jobs, cost of living, schools, housing, crime rate, proximity to beaches, and last but certainly not least weather? Thanks for any and all information.

Hi sunnyday5!

While Greenville's proximity to beaches obviously cannot compare with the coastal cities in SC, they are just a short drive away. The most important factor to consider in this regard is that moving inland and vacationing at the beach allows you to enjoy what it has to offer without putting your entire lifestyle in the hands of potentially dangerous weather which can and does happen when hurricanes strike the coast. I will say that in each of the other categories you mentioned, there is no better place in this state than this city.

Jobs...
Economically, Greenville regularly leads the way with new jobs being created by expanding or relocating companies, many of which are international companies.

Cost of living...
This city is also well known for being one of the most affordable places in the the nation, which is a great bonus considering all it has to offer that you would usually pay an enormous price for.

Schools...
The schools here are among the best in the state, with several facilities specializing in specific fields of study.

Housing...
Housing is available in many different forms and at any price level you could hope to find.

Crime rate...
The crime rate in the city is very low compared to most cities this size, and you can expect safety virtually everywhere you go. As with every city, there are the less desirable places that you will avoid and shouldn't need to visit anyway, but I have been there and it is not any worse than most cities' poor neighborhoods. Greenville is really doing a great job of revitalizing these older low income neighborhoods that once were havens for crime, so the positive effects are growing as time goes by.

Weather...
What can I say, but that Greenville enjoys a wonderfully moderate climate year-round, which also allows you to experience all four seasons without extreme discomfort. We enjoy a very long season of comfortable weather for outdoor festivals, concerts, plays, moonlight movies, markets, sidewalk dining, window shopping, sports, and countless other fantastic activities beyond Downtown. Basically, it is difficult to adequately express exactly how pleasant and awesome living in Greenville is. To say that Greenville's quality of life is high, just doesn't do the city proper justice.

I hope this little teaser is at least slightly helpful to you.

The West End of Greenville's downtown was at one point one of the worse places in the city for drugs/crime. As Skyliner said, Greenville is doing an excellent job revitalizing these areas. The West End is now home to the new Greenville Drive baseball stadium, a few art galleries, many excellent restaurants, condos, and so on.

Of course there are still areas you would want to avoid, which is easy to do. In my opinion, you're only going to have trouble if you go looking for it. (for the most part)
