I live in a town called Chesterfield. About 15 minutes south of Trenton. Its a great town. Good schools. Things close enough. But I have to be honest with you - I am pondering leaving the great "garden state" myself. Its very expensive. And its not going to get cheaper any time soon. My taxes have risen $3000 in 3 years. You really need to do your research. I don't know where you'd be coming from so I can't compare areas for you. But I can tell you that you probably will need to increase your salary. A one bedroom garden apartment rents for 950/month - depending on the area you want.

I have lived in a lot of parts of the state....if you have any questions I'd be happy to help.
The schools in Hamilton, at least the ones near me (mercerville) weren't anything special. While there are nice areas in Hamilton the suburban congestion and sprawling strip malls everywhere kind of ruin it. As far as Trenton goes, it has no redeeming qualities. It is the sorriest excuse for a capital city, yes it sucks that bad.

Has it ever occured to you that maybe, just maybe those "neanderthals" *might* be on to something and know something you do not? Do you think their areas are in such demand because they are just like the "North"? HARDLY!

Just look at S.E. Florida. It never used to be like it is...very opposite. Until the area was flooded with people from the N.E. who could not go out of their comfort zone and experience something outside of what they were used to...and blamo - S.E. FL looks just like the N.E. in most regards and people AGAIN want out.

These "backwoods" "Ignorant" "hillbillies" might have something to teach you about life, society and family. OPEN your eyes or do everyone a favor and go back to the place you came from. If not, do YOURSELF a favor and embrace the culture you moved to.

I'm currently in CT, have lived in FL and NC so I have no dog in this fight aside from a dose of reality and being honest at a core level.

Regards,
People are people where ever you go. They are all the same and they are all the same as they are different. I remember one Christmas I was sick as a dog. I couldn't even hold my head up (really bad flu) and I was in bed all Christmas day. Do you think one family member thought to make up a Christmas plate of food for me from Christmas dinner that I missed? Nope. The next day when I could finally get out of bed I went looking for food .... but all gone! It's not that they are bad people, they are nice people, they just aren't thoughtful. Some people are and some people aren't. It's just the way it is. It's not a Northern thing or a Southern thing. At least I don't think it is ....

I disagree with most of your post. Sorry.

Yes there are constants in the world such as "jerks are everywhere" but how you are raised and the moral character you have and were instilled with very much define who you are as a person and how you will act in day to day life.

In my experience, there are more people (Natives) in the South who act upon their "upbringing" be it "momma taught me" or "I was raised Baptist" than other parts of the country. I think it's a good thing and a breath of fresh air.

We are not monkey's born in the wild. We are free thinking human beings who can reason and learn. From birth humans need to be taught moral character and what type of behavior is acceptable as "good" is NOT in our nature. Witness the toddlers creed as an example. http://smith.soehd.csufresno.edu/toddler.html

Just something to think about.

P.S. You'll hear a lot of what I wrote in just about any bible believing church in the South...which is my very point.

Because we are getting off track I won't make any further comment. After I've moved south, I'll come back here to City-Data and put in my 2 cents.

Oh wait, I just read the link you included with your post. "Toddler's Creed". That just about sums up society as I know it. You mean it's different in the south because of all the church goers? Well then, another reason why I can't wait to get there!!!

Cool You've got to see it to decide

25 pages of relevant and non-relevant comments lead me to believe that Greenville, like other places, must be lived to decide. I call on my experience in moving from Phoenix, AZ to Montgomery, AL. It was quite a culture shock being exposed to Southern discrimination from both sides of the color spectrum. My point is that until I lived there I could not decide if it suited me or not. As it turned out much of the town did suit me, but the lack of a developed "downtown" was the final impetus for me to look elsewhere for a better experience.

From the many blogs I have read on Greenville, it has the potential to be all I am looking for. But I will reserve my judgement until I get there.

I would suggest that all comments be taken with a grain of salt because just like the Bible, these comments were written by "people", and there is no more slanted and biased species on this earth than humans.

Part of the reason I am considering Greenville or Columbia SC is because of the fact that there seems to be more of a christian environment there than where I currently am (NJ). I like the fact that there are a zillion churches, a zillion christian radio stations and scripture vs on billboards! I am hoping Greenville stays that way. What I did notice in Greenville and Columbia was the politeness of people. I was amazed when I didn't "go" immediately when the light turned green, no one flipped me the bird or honked at me!

OH MY! You mean they DON'T do that everywhere???? They actually give you more than 1.25 seconds to go on a green light! WOW! That alone makes me look forward to moving. Hey all you Yankees that want to move south, do what I am doing ....

My New Years Resolution is that I am going to SMILE more! No matter what. I figure that way I'll be prepared for the south. YAH!!!!! An no joking here, really.

I know I'm going to anger a few people but I'm going to say it anyway.....I am looking foward to moving to SC for several reasons, some obvious such as weather, aesthetic beauty, cost of living etc...but also because I find more of a christian environment, less stressed out pissed off people, and less immigrants who don't speak english. Everywhere I go here in NJ, immigrants own the stores, the gas stations etc. Is getting on my nerves. I don't mind immigrants at all, but it bugs me when I go to buy a soda or gas, and the guy behind the counter hardly understands english.

Default Knocks on Greenville and the South

I am getting a little tired of all of you who move here from the North and then make cracks about us and our cities. Maybe we should start with bumper stickers like they have in Austin Texas! "We don't care how you did things up North" and "Delta will gladly fly you back up there"
I listen to people complain about "southern drivers" when most of the people in our towns and cities these days came from the north! Maybe the rude etc people you are running into are some of your old "Neighbors".
No the south isn't for everyone, but I suggest for those of you considering moving here to give us a chance. Don't come here though if you want a NYC located in the south because you won't find it. We are friendly, and we like our slow pace of life.
Try the East coast of Florida that they now call The NYC of the South, more New Yorkers there than anything else.
